Farewell forever to Rice?
On Saturday, November 17th, we play at Rice. And thus ends a football relationship that began in 1916 and spans 89 total games. (We lead the series 48-40-1). I will mourn the loss of the Marching Owl Band. God speed Owls.

Let's all hope it's farewell forever to Rice. Blowing an OOC slot on a home and home with them would be an epic fail considering we're trying to schedule opponents our fans might actually want to see us play against.

And considering we rarely beat them in Houston.

We're booked up with Tech, TCU, Baylor, and A&M. At least at the moment.

I've always loved playing Rice...but, attendance is miserable at either school when we play. So for now, Goodbye.

What is wrong with some of you? I wish Rice would do well. I love their stadium. They are a fellow private school.
But they aren't trying to win. We finally rid ourselves of this albatross around our neck and you want to schedule them OOC?
If you want to be successful in life you don't hang around with a bunch of trash meth-heads. Same principle applies here. We must get away from Rice forever. (Or until they try to win).
Bottom line is this: Whatever changed that refocused us on athletics: Lamar Hunt's death, conference change on the horizon, Ghost of Football Past visiting Turner, whatever it was, has happened. If you aren't here to win and be a real Div. IA team, instead of a WAC 2-win bottom 10 team that judges their coaches on the basis of if they are "a good Christian man" instead of win, go away. You are holding us down. If you are here for a participant ribbon and "doing things the right way" instead of "winning":
Go support Rice. Only.

I will miss the loss of any former SWC opponent on our schedule. Just too much nostalgia for me to ignore Rice and our series with Rice.
But it is time to move on in the changing dynamics of college football.

Re: Farewell forever to Rice?
I agree with you - ponyte. TV has destroyed so much of what is good about college football but the reality is that we have to move on with the change or lose out altogether. Needless to say, that wouldn't only hurt our athletic program but the school itself. It's time to move on & grow - which is long overdue!
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

I wish Rice well but we are MUCH better off playing UNT; they are nearby and will attract a larger crowd than Rice. Play Rice in hoops?
