New Big East Commissioner to be announced today

"After several months of searching, it appears the Big East Conference has their man.

Former CBS Sports Vice President Mike Aresco will be named as the conference's new commissioner at a press conference later today.

Aresco was chosen by interim commissioner Joe Bailey among a group of finalists that included conference S enior Associate Commissioner Nick Carparelli, former Patriot Conference counsel Jack Mula, Pac-12 Deputy Commissioner Kevin Weiberg, and Major League Baseball executive Vice President Tim Brosnan among others.

Mike Aresco is a natural fit for the conference given his television
background and the need to solidify a new television deal, in the wake
of other recent major deals finalized by other Big Five conferences and
member institutions.

The conference will send a team of Aresco and Chris Bevilacqua
into an exclusive period of 60-day negotiations with ESPN, in an effort
to create a new partnership which could rival similar agreements the
Mothership has with the ACC.

NBC is also expected to be a player in the negotiation process should
the talks with ESPN end up being fruitless, given the network's desire
to expand on its current coverage which is focused exclusively on Notre Dame football.

For the Big East, the time is now.

In the current climate of college football, there's no time to waste
and every business opportunity must be capitalized upon immediately.
After all, there's always someone waiting in the wings if you can't
close the deal.

Mike Aresco, evidently, is the closer the conference needs to ensure
its long-term sustainability and to give it a chance to continue to
compete athletically in a sport that continues to grow stronger the farther South you go."
