One thing to think about when considering where to put your money (and I donate to both the Diamond M Club and recently the Mustang Club) if there is more interest in SMU as a whole, which can be brought about by more successful bball and football, then there will be more interest in the band, and greater interest in the band might mean your efforts yeild more rewards.

Why would I want to pay money to join a rich, alum club and sound all snobby on a message board?

And if ANYONE gets my money, it's the band. I put too friggin much hard work, money, time, and effort into that band to see it dwindle how it has. If anyone deserves it, it's my brothers and sisters.

I think your desire to put your financial support towards the Mustang Band is good and admirable and if your funds are limited and you have to choose, then you have made a good choice. Having said that, there is no reason to at the same time deride the Mustang Club and its members. There are a ton of $50 level members who are doing what they can to help support SMU athletics, and we all know we need all the help we can get.

Birddog Freshman (you will always be a Freshman to me). What have you got against the Mustang Club? What is the source of this ire? I would like to chat to dissuade you from such feelings, since, as you know, I am both a alum and supporter of the Mustang Band as well as a fundraiser for the Mustang Club. Both organizations depend on each other for a lot. I don't think any Mustang Band alum or enthusiast should think of their support as either/or. If the athletic department is better funded, leading to better recruiting, better marketing, better paid coaches etc., leading to bowl games and NCAA tourney appearances, you can bet your bottom dollar that recruiting trombone players will be a heck of a lot easier.

Many of the most active Mustang Club members (including myself (band alum), a former Peruna mascot (Diamond M Club Member), the chair of the fundraising campaign (Gerry York, huge band supporter and Diamond M Club Member), last year's MC president (Tom Yenne, band alum)) are neither rich snobby alums, nor, quite obviously, antagonistic to the band.

The recent flurry of posts about the MC is simply because we are in the middle of the fund raising campaign, and I'm just trying to encourage people to join any way I can at any level I can. If you, or anyone else, would like your "ticket" to the MC halftime reception on Saturday, I'll be handing out those "tickets", i.e. pledge cards at the game on Saturday.

But seriously, DM, you're right in your previous post about the entertainment, bringing in fans, costing money, etc. I just think they need to decide whether to invite groups of kids to come to the games for free (with paying parents, etc), or to let them come to the games for free (with paying parents, etc) and perform at halftime. I'm all about getting the local community out to see SMU sporting events. There were probably 1000 Fellowship of Christian Athletes kids at a football game this year, and I'm glad, let them in for free, let them become fans, I just wouldnt really be interested in seeing them do something for halftime. Am I making sense? Basically, why not let the pips in for free to watch the game anyways (what Pips coach could pass up a deal for Buy 1 adult, bring 50 kids free), but try to get something else going for halftime. I know I'm missing some HUGE step in all of this, that will totally debunk my whole argument.

Sorry, but I just couldn't stand a few people's post about, "if you don't like the entertainment then come join us for halftime." To me, it seemed like some sort of arrogant cop-out. Now, believe me, honestly and truthfully, when I say that I know it's not. I know and have befriended some people in the Mustang Club (i.e. Gerry York, who is a great man), and I do appreciate all that they have done for us, but previous comments really irritated me.

And at some point I will contribute to the Mustang Club. I just hate how all was made to sound so arrogant and c.ocky (this word doesn't need to be deleted by the board) earlier on a stupid message board.

Regardless, I'm not in the best of moods to discuss snything right now. I'll clarify myself better after this weekend.

I think the opportunity has been there on the 'Vard for several years now and it would seem everyone is a little too paranoid to let anyone else know who they are. Aside from that...GREAT idea.
