Also loved the recaps of the '85, '86 seasons. The '86 UT game in Austin was fantastic, even in defeat. Listened on the radio. Went nuts when y'all tied it in the fourth quarter. Will never forget it.

Agreed. I was at that '86the game. As fans we were surrounded at outnumbered, but boy were we LOUD. ut only won as they were given the game by horrible referring.

I was there also, about 7th row up near 10 yard line, with my father and grandfather. One of the last things able to do with my grandfather before he passed away. Remember it vividly.
Yes, Morris was tackled in the end zone closest to where all of us were sitting. Ron made a great reverse spin move that fooled UT DB who had no choice but to tackle him. Back judge originally threw flag, then discussion with umpire and ref and it was waived off. We also had TD run called back by late "flag" for holding. Flag was so late the ref. originally didn't know it was thrown, almost comical.
What you may or may not remember is it was the game either the week or near the week their running back Edwin Simmons was caught running nude behind apartments in Austin while he was drunk/high. Original thought was he would not be allowed to play, but typical UT that only lasted about a second. They then spun it he had some "substance" problem and it was those drugs fault. My law partner now who is big UT alum helped in getting charges against Simmons how do they say "handled."
When Edwin Simmons arrived at Texas in 1983, many considered him the best freshman running back in the nation. In his collegiate debut, against Oklahoma, he had two brilliant TD runs, one stamped Heisman, the other All-Pro.
But before long, everything went wrong. Simmons has had five knee operations and was the subject of an internal investigation into his leasing of a BMW. This fall, he showed up five pounds overweight and explained that it was because he had been in summer school and had studied so hard his brain had taken on weight. But, at last, he seemed ready to play against Oklahoma on Saturday.
Then, at 4:40 a.m. on Sept. 27, Simmons was arrested behind a house in West Austin. A screen had been removed from one of the windows. According to police, Simmons had trouble coming up with his name or what town he was in. However, he did say, "I think I'm a football player.... I think my number is 33." Marijuana, he said, had left him addled. Oh yes, Simmons was nude.
A university spokesman suggested that Simmons might have been sleepwalking. Perhaps. Coach Fred Akers was not amused and suspended the running back indefinitely, even though he wasn't charged. Naturally, the story made quick time to Norman, where Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer congratulated a reporter on asking an appropriate question. "You get the prize," said Switzer. "And the prize is Edwin Simmons's clothes."
Alas, amid the snickers, another starry athletic future seems to be ending atop a pile of broken dreams
Dave, I have to tell you how impressed I am with the detail, research, and hard work you put into the book. I just finished the chapter on all of the detailed cheating going on at UT in the 80's. It brought back a lot of the stories I heard when it was going on. Thanks for digging through the NCAA investigations and reports to remind us of the truth....UT is a sleazy group of organized criminals. I am one of the "old timers". However, this book would be eye opening for you younger fans.
