The Phony Pony looks like the real Ford Mustang Pony.

Yawn. This is such a non-issue. It's hard to tell the difference in the first place, and as long as the average Joe thinks it's and SMU Mustang, I'm fine with it. My 4 year old sees a Mustang (the car), and says SMU! I am AOK with her thinking that all those Mustang drivers are Pony Fans.

I just wish we had more different licensed stuff. At Rally House, which obviously tried to carry just about anything they can get their hands on and which I surely do appreciate having a bona fide SMU section, compared to other schools there are slim pickens, especially for women and kids.

The choice isn't between phony pony or no merchandise. Simply correct the manufacturers over time. Nobody is demanding you pull stuff off shelves.

It's the Ford Mustang not a fake Peruna.

It matters because it matters. Putting the wrong symbol on official SMU merchandise and other items signifies sloppiness on SMU's part.

If someone came up with a longhorn symbol close to UT's, do you think they would put up with that appearing on their officially licensed products, or in their practice facility?

The phony pony simply doesn't look as good as the official pony. In addition to the cutesy curled tail, the phony pony also has larger, rounded hindquarters. Let Ford Motor Co., JJ Pearce and Grapevine High Schools have the phony pony. Only SMU should be able to use the real pony.

And Rally House doesn't try to get its hands on every piece of SMU merchandise it can. That's ridiculous. They carry a small amount of SMU product because that's proportional to the amount of interest they believe there is in SMU. Look at how much the SMU bookstore has, or sites like FansEdge and fanatics.com.

I believe Ford was originator the symbol. In fact did SMU not get it from Ford and change it around at bit?

Other way around as I understood it. Ford asked SMU to be able to use the symbol and were made to have the Mustang running in the opposite direction. Of course, I may have made all this up in a drunken haze back in the day, but I think that is the way it went.

See the second post down. Near the end it discusses the SMU logo.

This. We expect to be taken seriously as an athletic power house, but can't even get a handle on our own merchandising.
