I want a school with instant name recognition. The service academies fit that bill and carry national followings. Bring on AFA or Army, or preferably both. And then (pipe dream) give me ND to round it out.

Ignoring the circus that college football has become, I would prefer Rice or Tulsa. But since it doesn't look like Rice plans on spending what it takes to put together a strong team, I wouldn't want them. And Tulsa does not elevate our profile enough to remain a top conference. I wish I didn't have to think about those things. Remember when you actually had to win to get to a better conference (I'm talking to you A&M, Mizzou and Syracuse)?
But the game is what it is. So Notre Dame is the obvious choice. I'm not going to pretend that the BE is not clinging to life as a major college football conference. And ND immediately restores legitimacy. In fact, considering how many times ESPN has been trashing the Irish, I would almost think that's what is going to happen. I hate ESPN so much right now....But the reality is that ND gives us any TV contract we want and several bowl ties. The bandwagon of idiots on ESPN immediately eats their words if ND goes to the Big East. I am conflicted as an also Irish fan (SMU grad, but Catholic). But it would save the conference. And if they are serious about maintaining integrity in the game, the Big East makes some sense. Good academics and at least the appearance of integrity.
BYU comes close to saving the conference. It is a good point that Mormonism is spreading and as a Catholic that automatically believes I should be an Irish fan, I get the concept perfectly. So they are an obvious second choice.
I, personally, thought Villanova was a lock as much as I hated that idea. They seemed to have a lot of say when the league wanted to make Temple a football member again. But they were ultimately overruled which is a good sign.
But considering the comments of the commish (likely an independent), I think Army will end up in the conference. That's not terrible. But we're back to where we are now. The conference's future as a part of the conversation in major college football depends on every team getting better and winning big games including bowls against big programs in other conferences. That starts tonight with Boise on the main stage against MSU. Come on Boise! Shut ESPN UP!!!

the question is whether the Big East will want to go with 17 or 18 bball members. If there are no further defections, there will be 13 football and 17 bball members. With 17 for hoops, you could play everyone once for a 16 game slate and a schedule that would be fair to all. That would mean we need another football only member.
I actually like the idea of 17 members for bball and a "play them all" schedule. Could qualify the top 12 teams for the BE Tourney and make teams # 5-12 play 1st round games at home of higher seed, then advance 8 teams to MSG for a 3 days to determine the champion.
I still think we could see Notre Dame eventually join a conference and that's another game changer.
