As a basketball player for SMU, James "Jim" Krebs was responsible for the team's success during the mid-1950s. In 1956, Krebs led the Mustangs to the NCAA semifinals before losing to Bill Russell and San Francisco University . The next year, SMU reached the Midwest Regionals before suffering an overtime loss to a Kansas team led by Wilt Chamberlain. Krebs led the Mustangs to three consecutive Southwest Conference championships while earning All-SWC honors each of those years, as well as All-American honors in his senior year. At the end of Krebs SMU career, he held school records of 50 points in a game, 282 points in a conference season, 624 points in a season, and 1,753 points in his career. Krebs played with the Minneapolis and Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA from 1957-1964. He scored 4,128 points in 515 games and was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1976.

The SMU graybeards will tout Jim Krebs and Gene Phillips, but since they played before I was around, I'll echo the same trio you've got listed there.

Original Frank's has the best list for people who have seen most of these players-although as much as I loved him-Quinton Ross and BHop are much better than Delzell. Without question the All-Time Team would include Krebs, Terrell and G. Phillips. I think you'd have to throw Koncak and Charles Beasley in there too. BHop with a strong senior year could still be as good as we have had at the PG position. Sometimes though I think we underestimate the contribution Kato Armstrong made especially in a very strong senior season. I can still remember Kato raining down 3s in that SWC Tourney Championship at Reunion and his play against David Rivers and ND. There's a couple of others who probably don't make the Top 10 but were pretty stout as upperclassmen like Kevin Lewis and Eric Longino. Zach Thiel was pretty strong in another era at Point Guard. Its hard to name many PFs better than Larry Davis although he didn't improve as much as hoped. Damon Hancock deserves a mention among the SMU greats. And although I never saw him Max Williams the grandfather of SMU recruit Matt Williams had a legendary career.

the all-time team's low post players would be easy to identify and you guys have already mentioned Krebs, Terrell and Koncack. Those are the no-brainers but I might throw Carroll Hooser in there, too. The guards are tougher and I agree Gene Phillips would be the shooting guard, although Beasley and Carl Wright were certainly talented. Point guard would be a tough call, but surrounded by this kind of talent, I think I'd like to see Butch Moore captain the ship. I agree we've had some good ones, though and BHop certainly deserves to be on that list, along with Kato Armstrong, Denny Holman and even Billy Allen should get a mention as far as "heady" point guards go. It would really be tough to pick a starting five by position. Who would be your "3"? Phillips could play at small forward in a 3 guard set, but the guys who come to mind for me are Kevin Lewis and Carlton McKinney. Who am I forgetting?

How about a specific position for "off the bench intimidating hatchet man" Clayton Kovar. Not a top 3 man but certainly a man who let his presence be known under the basket. As far as a shooting guard, my vote goes to Phillips.

Stallion, you and Mr. D may appreciate this. My favorite SMU team was, I think, the 1972 team. I was young, but I remember Zack Thiel, Delzell, Bobby Rollins, with IT and Reuben Triplett down low. Triplett may have been a transfer, I can't remember. It was IT's last year at SMU and his best team. It was very inventive at that time as it was one of the first "3 guard" lineups ever in the SWC. That year UT had a new highly touted soph named Larry Robinson (it was before Frosh could play with the varsity). SMU had a big lead on the SWC field halfway through the season and had a mini fade at the end (a recurring theme). The end result was a tie for first place and a one game playoff in Waco. Tied with a minute to go, we eventually lost to Robinson and UT. I think we went on the NCAAs but that may have been at the time each conference only sent one team with ony a few wild cards. Back then, the tourney was only about 24 to 30 teams.

I'm not certain, but I think Clayton Korvar was a soph on that team. He was a crowd favorite and he really got the fans into the game.

That was fun. Big crowds, no pro teams to steal attention, no cable TV, DMN all over each game, all the SWC rivalries. Regretably, I wonder if it will ever be that way again.

Krebs came within an eyelash off knocking off Wilt & Kansas. Hop can't get the Ponies past TCU.

Best player ever to commit to SMU-Larry Johnson. Oh, wait. That is right. Ken Pye determined that he should not go to SMU and revoked the scholarship personally. Yeah, who needs a kid that will go on to win a national championship, Naismith and Wooden Awards as the college Player of the Year and also be the first pick in the draft.

Ira Terrell was right there with Larry Johnson. Don't know if some of you realize just what a sensation Terrell was from his first game. He turned down top national programs and was rated as one of top high school All-Americans to come out of Texas prior to the 1970s when Texas wasn't held in the regard it is beginning to today. I believe Terrell was offer by UCLA and a host of other top programs.
