SMU Defense Beaten Like a Drum
again nice little CUSA Defense against nice little non-BCS teams-but needs recruiting/talent upgrade on defense too to compete at next level-if that's really where you want the program to go.
Very bad numbers against quality offense
6.9 Yards Per Carry
11.2 Per Pass Attempt
16.4 Per Pass Completion
9.1 Per Offensive Play
613 Yards Total Offense
0 Sacks
0 TFL
0 Ints
0 Fumbles
SMU was never in this game despite the referee complaing and it wasn't just Parks that were getting exposed-although he scortched. There were uncovered guys in the middle of the field too simply running free. Baylor's offense deserves credit

Re: SMU Defense Beaten Like a Drum
i think never in this is incorrect. they would have worn us down eventually no doubt - the talent level was just well above ours. Those receivers were big strong and fast.
However had we not coughed up the ball at the end of the first half drives and that 14 point swing of a call been skipped - we are in the game for sure. Still a loss i think - but it would feel a lot different then a 30 point loss.
Folks - we aren't big 12 quality. Neither is TCU as they are about to find out. Baylor is not mediocre - they will finish in the top 5 in the big 12 which is pretty dang good.
That said - we need to hire two young stud recruiters IMMEDIATELY.

Re: SMU Defense Beaten Like a Drum
This looked like the defense from the A&M game last year - very tentative and scared.
I think we don't have the athletes on offense to give the defense quality players to practice against. The Baylor WR core was really superior to SMUs receiver. I suspect that once again, the defense will turn around over the course of the SFA game and then the bye week as they adapt to the speed of play, and dominate in CUSA and the bowl game.

OK, I agree. Let's get specific. Are we going after Billings HARD? We lost out on Bruno it seems. Who else are we going after hard? Need pass rushers and safeties who can run and hit. Who should/are we going after? 1-3 years down the road.Stallion wrote:again nice little CUSA Defense against nice little non-BCS teams-but needs recruiting/talent upgrade on defense too to compete at next level-if that's really where you want the program to go.

Did Stephon Sanders come down with West Nile Virus while I was gone. Hadn't thought about him all nite-which is not such a surprise considering he was almost invisible in Stats with a single assisted tackle-what's the deal there-I really thought he was ready to dominate. Love to see some video on Baylor's OLM because it seems like they pretty much took our LBs out of the Game. Jagared Davis?

Re: SMU Defense Beaten Like a Drum
give credit to Baylor; they play at a pace where they take the DL out of the game . If you blitz them, the dink you underneath. Should be very entertaining when they play West Virginia. 1st team to 50 wins
Re: SMU Defense Beaten Like a Drum
You would think after 3 straight bowl games and given the ability to get better recruits than any coach since 1986 that we would have recruited better players especially at the skilled positions. And the current class does not look any better, it's okay not middle of the road BCS caliber. Good luck in the BE next year after having t plat TTech, Baylor, aTm, and TCU in non conference play. I just hope Louisville is not in our division.

The weekly grind will certainly be tougher, but I think TCU will be able to hold their own against most Big 12 teams and I hope they do...to further prove that a small private school can do it if they put their mind to it.gostangs wrote:Folks - we aren't big 12 quality. Baylor has already proved that last year so it has already been proven. And they smacked SMU around pretty good as well yesterday.Insane_Pony_Posse wrote:The weekly grind will certainly be tougher, but I think TCU will be able to hold their own against most Big 12 teams and I hope they do...to further prove that a small private school can do it if they put their mind to it.gostangs wrote:Folks - we aren't big 12 quality. True, Baylor is another example, but I was referring to a school that had been down and out and clawed their way back into a major conference the hard way instead of being given a ticket into the dance. SMU needs to mimic the TCU model. (minus the drug dealing)Rebel10 wrote:Baylor has already proved that last year so it has already been proven. Re: SMU Defense Beaten Like a Drum
I'll say it again. Sure Baylor has better talent, but so did TCU last year when we beat them. The difference, TCU was our 4th game last year. They are our 4th game this year. We are Never prepared for our first game the last few years. Remember how we had to come back from a 9 point lead by SFA in our first game in the 4th quarter in 2009 ? We had more talent than SFA, BUT SFA still had the lead the second half. Why ? Because we were not prepared for the first game. June says his system works best at preparing a team. June says they proved it in the pros. But he forgets in the pros they have preseason games. College Football does not. Every game counts...We show every year that we are unprepared for the first game. Anyone who watched that game could see we were unprepared to play. There are a lot of teams that played this week end with less talent than us, but they would have kicked our butt this past week end too.

Re: SMU Defense Beaten Like a Drum
Then we should have played Mary Hardin Baylor and not Baylor
Re: SMU Defense Beaten Like a Drum
Baylor was down and out too before Briles. We need a track team to mimic TCU. That's how they got a lot of their speed.Insane_Pony_Posse wrote:True, Baylor is another example, but I was referring to a school that had been down and out and clawed their way back into a major conference the hard way instead of being given a ticket into the dance.
