Tried to warn ya"ll about Parks. Top 25 defense? Margus was manhandled by a redshirt freshman, and the front seven was MIA.

Pretty simple fake/dropback/pass plays...

Don't know why it looked so easy.

the way the defense looked, it sure seemed that they did not have enough contact and hitting in preseason. Does JJ still keep contact to minimum in fall drills? when proven players like JaGared and others look like they haven't played football before, something had to be the issue. i thought sanders was gonna be a beast too, but invisible.

Both Sterling Moore and Richard Crawford look questionable in their first couple of games. I still have faith in Parks. If he is not up to game speed by TCU then I will be worried.

Defense doesn't get fumbles, because they don't hit hard enough to wake anyone up.

Crappy DBs kept biting on play fakes allowing their man to get steps on them, absolutely no pass rush, QB delivers ball, completion and repeat ad nauseum.
They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

I thought it was really surprising how non-involved the linebackers were in the game. JD was out of position on the first TD pass, then was out of position on the pass play that lead to the second TD. Sanders blew assignment on the second TD pass. No blitzing all night - it wasn't like the Baylor line was picking players up, we just were rushing three a lot of the time.

Margus wasn't shut down individually. He and Taylor both got hurt on the first drive of the game and Hunt was double teamed all night long.

I am more concerned about our safety play than the play of Parks. I thought our safeties were the ones exposed the most yesterday.

That said, our front 7 [deleted] the bed unlike almost anytime I have sen before. Worse than TAMU last season if you ask me.

Still digesting what happened. I suppose it's a good thing to face reality...so, we have a long way to go.

We can argue about GG being new, refs, dropped passes, etc...but I think this post nails it...no excuse for what happened on defense and specifically front 7. They were non factors and Baylor manhandled every one of them.

I thought defense was going to dominate this year...damn.

the hope/rationalization right now is that the lack of contact in fall practice leaves the defense unready to play. definitely seems to be a pattern in our openers. maybe that can be remedied over the next 3 weeks. I just can't believe that JaGared and Sanders were such non factors after the way they looked flying around in the bowl game just 6 months ago.

Mason has had better game plans than this one. He did not do much blitzing. Some of the blame falls on Mason and not all on the players.

You watch, by the third game, SMU will be a pretty good team over all. We've had our big scrimmage now to learn from, and will make adjustments against SFA. Now I'm not saying we will beat A&M, but I think we will play better against A&M in week 3 then we did last year and Baylor this year... I do have concerns over the secondary depth, and I think Jeremy Gray has more potential at CB than Chris Parks, who was beat on at least 2 scores or was it 3 TD passes ?

This.

Happens every year under June. We will beat either A$M or TCU. Mark it down.

Actually, we did go man in the secondary. That was kind of the odd thing. No blitzing, but we went man. Even in the slot out of the nickel. The safeties were nowhere to be found. There was a play early in the game, where there was a throw to the near side and Scott knocked the ball down. there was a penalty on the play to extend the drive, but that is the only time during the game that our safety made a play. On the other deep balls, our safeties were completly out of the picture, having bit on fakes. Our LBs were just standing around in a zone about 5 yards off the line of scrimmage instead of blitzing.
