Its hard to take seriously anyone who mentions Raymond Van Beveren in the same sentence as those other players.

The highlights you're remembering for Kato actually all happened his junior year. He was academically ineligible for most of his senior year, I think he only played in 5-6 games. That was a real travesty.

Krebs, Phillips, and Terrell are undoubtedly amongst our all time best, but I never actually got to watch them, so I cant really compare them to more recent players. My 5 best come with the caveat that this is only from 1980 to the present, those that I have actually watched.

PG Kato Armstrong
SG Quentin Ross
SF Carlton McKinney/Mike Wilson
PF Tim Mason
C Jon Koncak

Mike Wilson. There's a guy I hadn't thought of in a long time. I remember 1992 when he was a heckuva guard for an otherwise unremarkable team.

Damon was certainly a talented player, but is not deserving of any all-time lists. He put up what looked like good numbers but you have to keep in mind that when he was on the floor it was typically 4 guys standing around waiting for a rebound and one guy about to try the jump stop in the lane again. His stats always came at the expense of the team as a whole in my opinion.

It is clear from this list that our FB all-stars are head-and-shoulders above our BB all-stars.

While our BB success is limited, we actually had a team that I believe defeated both Kentucky and North Carolina on the road within a 5-day span and were poised to be ranked #1 in the nation had they defeated TTech in Lubbock, which they did not. That team was comprised of Jon Koncack, Butch Moore, Larry Davis and Carl Wright, whom Al McGuire called ‘the most athletic BB player in college’. Surprisingly, outside of Koncack, none are getting much love on this thread.

I was a season ticket holder during the Gene Phillips and IT days. Both make the all-time lists. I would also rather have IT than Koncack, but would gladly take either.

Yeah, who needs a kid that will go on to win a national championship, Naismith and Wooden Awards as the college Player of the Year and also be the first pick in the draft.

Didn't it also have something to do with someone else taking his SAT's. In fact that is the reason why he wound up in Odessa for 2 years before UNLV got ahold of him.

In reply to Original Frank, Ira Terrell graduated in 1976, he played his freshman year with Rubin Triplett. Throughout IT's tenure at SMU, Texas Tech and their center Bullock was the big rival. Clayton Korver was a senior who graduated in 1973 and was drafted that year by the Oakland Raiders (I'm not making that up). During that period of time, the SWC transformed starting with IT's coming to SMU and Houston entering the conference in 1973. The conference went from the WWE posing as basketball to some high quality basketball. Arkansas, UT, went out and hired name coaches. It is ironic that two schools which were instrumental in shifting the SWC from the dark ages to modern basketball got flushed when the conference broke up, Houston and SMU. Those two schools proved basketball could thrive in Texas.

Regiie Franklin might not be a starter on this list, but a dam@ good 6th man. A great leaper & incredible shot blocker-- wasn't there a "SI" picture of 6'4" Franklin blocking one of the 7' Towers of Kentucky (Roby) back in the 70's? He's still ranked as one of the all-time shot blockers even though he only played 2 seasons (JC transfer-NMMI)...

Top 3: Jim Krebs, Gene Phillips, Kato Armstrong
Was it Clayton Korver or Kelvin Korver who went on to play for the Oakland Raiders? Neither had a football background.
