Turnovers are still a problem
I thought turnovers were an emphasis for this team during practice, as we finished dead last in 2011. Looks like nothing has changed in that department. No forced turnovers. Offense gives ball away 3 times. Ugh. Sloppy.

Yes the int's hurt but it is going to happen. It was the first game of the season and GG was playing in his first real game in the system. I'm not saying that its ok, but the first one just caught the receiver off guard even though he did get both hands on it and the second was just thrown behind the receiver. I just think that with this offense you have to deal with you share of INTs. Lets be real he threw the ball 59 times yesterday, its going to happen. However, what has alarmed me for the past 2 years and I don't see that changing much this year is our defenses inability to create turnovers. Needs to happen to create momentum and change ball games

All mental. Need swagger to get turnovers. THIS is definitely where you can get on the coaches for it. The coaches, if they do anything, create the culture of the team and swagger has to be a part of the culture. Way too many of our players appear to play with our tails between our legs against the "big boys". Look at that one interview Zach Line did when asked about aTm last week. He's the biggest stud on the team and you can just tell by body language that he knows aTm is on another level than us.
Incoherent rambling for self entertainment purposes in an attempt to pick a fight with the Texas-centric crowd:
Need more Cali swagger (Cali guys don't know anything about being raised to think aTm, Texas, TCU, etc are supposed to be better than us). All the Cali guys we've had have been ballers in recent memory (the ones who actually made it to the field, that is).
Richard Crawford, Sterling Moore, Aaron Davis (Holloway WILL if he ever gets on the field), Montes will, I think CP has that potential . . . need more . . . if JJ didn't do the whacky ASU thing we'd probably have 3 more quality Cali guys (Marks, Lewis, Hulick)

We need more kids from Alabama. Ask Colt McCoy about their respect for Texas football. They've also won the last 3 crystal footballs.ojaipony wrote:All mental. Need swagger to get turnovers. Some of Bama's key players like the QB were from Texas. There are plenty of good players right here in Texas. We need a coaching staff full of good recruiters to get them in our uniform.

Best team in the country is SC and it's not even close. Probably the last 2 years actually. The second best team is probably Oregon. They are like pro teams. Pac12 is much better than the SEC. The speed is ridiculous. SEC gets love because what else are you going to do in bumfuck Alabama, Baton Rouge, Columbia, et al and east coast media bias plus Pac12 teams beat up on each other. Watch SC play. Oh, and one of our players used to throw to the 2nd best WR (Robert Woods). If he were 6'3" he would have been the highest recruited player out of high school and be next in line after Barkley.

Re: Turnovers are still a problem
I completely agree that there is great talent in TX (Houston and Dallas especially) but they are all from a generation that think SMU is a backwater and are biased and they want to play in the Big12. I say let's go outside the area to convince the 4 stars that they won't get on the field until seniors at SC, Oregon, UCLA, etc (you look at UCLA's recruiting class so far? They are a subaverage Pac12 team and they have pretty much ALL 4 stars with the exception of Printz).RepublicanPNY wrote:Some of Bama's key players like the QB were from Texas. Then, you get some wins and raise the eyebrows of local kids - Myer recruited Dallas, East TX, and wanted to dominate Houston. I like that, but that's the next step . . . that's why I was on the Klemm bandwagon for awhile - I really liked that strategy and saw Moreland and Holloway as a great example of that, but we have to get them ON the field and now Klemm's gone obviously, but we can still work it ... some good talent in Louisiana as well where JP is supposed to have influence.

Re: Turnovers are still a problem
Offensive turnovers like these I can forgive. Tough pass on the goal line with a fluke bounce. DJ with a helmet to helmet stunner causing him to drop the ball (should have been a penalty). With one pass off target and tipped, out of what, 50 passes?
No defensive turnovers is a bit concerning, but with no pressure it is harder to get them. That is where my concern is.

Vanderbilt doesn't just recruit Tennessee, Notre Dame doesn't recruit Indiana, Stanford doesn't just recruit California. Academic schools need to have a national recruiting footprint to compete nationally. You TX guys are deluded. A 5 star kid in TX is going to look at UT, A&M, OU, OK State, Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, and a host of other Big 12 schools, before giving us a sniff. I live in Georgia and G Tech recruits nationally. There is no way they can convince enough 5 star Georgia kids to look at them as opposed to UGA. They go to Florida, Alabama to get get kids that are not recruited by the Gators, FSU or Bama.
Marcel Dareus, the kid who cleaned Colt McCoys clock was from Birmingham,AL. I don't think Alabama had more than 2 TX kids on their roster last year. Auburn won their championship behind Cam Newton, from Atlanta, GA.
SMU has a national brand as an academic institution. There are tons of smart kids nationwide who would love to play for the Ponies and get a first rate degree.
