Preston road
It took all of 4 passes from Preston to show us all that he had more touch and accuracy then GG did yesterday. I kept waiting for GG to reign in his contol and it just never came. He put receivers in precarious positions especially in short routes all day and his deep passes were pretty much way off target too. Arm strength is so over-rated i.e. BLM. JJ has to figure it out if GG or Preston is a better game day performer practice be damned. They are both inexperienced and GG has sadly struggled for years now to get his game back to where it was in high school.
Re: Preston road
Let's hope the SFA game is a good tune up for him. We should have much better talent than SFA.

Re: Preston road
you are just wrong on that. GG didnt have a good day, but he was not the issue. the receivers let him (and us) down.
also - preston was in during clean up time - not the same game at that point.

Re: Preston road
Preston's deep pass to Dieter was well covered and well thrown-the best pass thrown all day clearly. And when you leave the receivers out to dry all day yes, they get a bit gun shy.

Re: Preston road
how is it leaving them out to dry to hit them in the hands? Both tipped balls should have been caught - in big boy football receivers go across the middle and catch the ball. If they are too small to take a hit that is our fault.
The issue was not Gilbert. He had a pretty good game actually. Our receivers had a horrible game and theirs were awesome.

Re: Preston road
Gilbert was off pretty much all day-most of his connections were dump offs-his down field accuracy was not good.

Re: Preston road
I will give GG time but he was not on target much of the time, throwing behind receivers. While the int off DJ might have been caught, tough low catch, the other int was way off and the receiver barely was able to reach behind him to deflect the ball.
First game jitters are out, let's fix the problems and move on.

Time to prove the adage that the most progress made during the year is between the first and second games.

Re: Preston road
Actually, I would argue that we didn't throw down the field much at all. I recall there really being 4 deep balls. The first was a backshoulder pass on the first drive, before the missed fieldgoal. Actually was a really nice pass. The second was the long ball to Holman that drew a pass interference. The third was the bad play by Thompson, where he slowed down, then sped up, then had the ball go off of a hand. Fourth was caught for a TD by Thompson.
I don't see where his deep passes were way off? Maybe I am missing something.
Brent Mustberger used to throw out the "happy feet" terminology all the time. I thought Gilbert had happy eyes. I thought he was too quick to check down to his third or fourth option, not letting to play time to develop. Clock was ticking a little too fast in his head. When he did check down, some of his throws were rifled in way to strong for the short pass. And some of the throws were just thrown away when the 4th option was covered.
The good thing is that we saw a lot of correctable issues with Gilbert yesterday. It will get better with him. Worried about our outside receivers though.
Conner Preston is a great guy, but Gilbert is definitely the way to go here.

Re: Preston road
Gilbert didn't have a superb game, but there were plenty of balls that were close enough for the receiver to get them. I know the INT at the goal line was tipped up by DJ, so it was not Gilbert's fault per se. Yeah, it was a little low, but it was catchable. I'm trying to remember, but I think the 2nd INT was tipped, too, so same goes for that one.
Our receivers were not getting much separation at all. As someone else pointed out in another thread, Baylor usually rushed only 3, and dropped 8 most of the game. Hard to put all our passing woes on Gilbert when he was still getting pressured with just 3 guys rushing, so he had to get rid of the ball early, and thus not giving our receivers time to get open given they were running in-between 8 guys.
On top of all that, he has still only been in the system for a month. I think he gives us our best chance to win, and I also think he'll get better throughout the season.

Re: Preston road
It was like JJ took a a page out of Greg Davis' playbook for this game. Too many screen passes and not enough shots down the field. When we did take a shot down the field, either GG put the ball on the money and the receiver misplayed the ball or the receiver screwed up the route. I think he could have played better for sure, but I can easily say he didn't lose the game for us. Our defense was atrocious, our receivers needed to wake up and the penalties killed us from the start. GG is the best arm we have had at QB in a long while. Some of his throws to the sideline between zone coverage last night pumped me up for what we can expect in the near future. He will get more familiar and make improvements each week.

Are these the same receivers who are coached by our new 'outstanding' receivers coach. The coach who is supposed to be so exacting and detailed. The coach who was reputed to be an outstanding recruiter but who couldn't find anybody to recruit.
