SFA Preview

Post by PurpleOut »

As promised, wanted to share a little insight on the Lumberjacks for the game this weekend. Tough game yesterday, so don't want to stir anything up there. I will say first and foremost that I don't expect us to win, but I think it can be a pretty good game. We've done it before and I think we can on Saturday as well. I think we saw some things yesterday that we can focus on, and put a lot of pressure on your defense. We're going to throw the ball and throw it after we throw it. As I said on a few other threads, our OC actually said, "We don't even want to run the ball."

Not a lot we can take from our game vs Southwestern Oklahoma. It was 49-0 in the 4th, and the final was 49-14. Was figuring it would have and should have a lot worse, but was basically just a glorified scrimmage. Scored on a 44-yard TD pass on the very first play. Don't think we opened up the playbook much. Highlights here (click on the VIDEO tab) http://sfajacks.cstv.com/index.html

QB: Brady Attaway, 6-1, 215, junior from Whitehouse. 2nd year starting at SFA. Had a really tough start to last season, but really came on late and played well. Last year he was very turnover prone, so that will be the key this year again (obviously). He played 2 and half quarters last week and racked up 354 yards and 3 TDs.

RB: Have a lot of good backs. The good news for us is we have lots of depth, the bad news is we don't run the ball much. Gus Johnson will be the starter, had 110 yards on 10 carries and 2 TDs last week. Doug Gentry (Purdue transfer) will be the first one off the bench.

WR: Lots of skill here, your secondary will be really tested. Trying to keep this objective, but we have two guys that I think can play on a higher level. #80 Cordell Roberson, 6-3, 215. All-American and two-time first-team all conference. Big receiver with good hands, had 8 catches for 100 yards and 1 TD in the first game. And the other WR is #17 Grayln Crawford. He's the speedster and is also the PR/KR. He had 1,843 all purpose yards last year. Marquis Mosley is another big WR to watch for.

OL: Was one of the top OLs in the nation last year, only giving up a few sacks (mainly because of our style of offense). And we returned 4 of those 5 starters.

DL: Led the nations in sacks last year, with 15 coming from pre-season All-American Willie Jefferson. He is a BU transfer that was moved from WR/TE to DE and has really excelled. Very athletic, 6-6 234. The rest of the line is good, but undersized. So I think that will be tough against Line. Malcom Mattox in the middle is solid.

LB: Led by Ryan Epperson, your typical hard nosed LB that just makes plays. Lost two LBs from last year, but got a good transfer from KU in Collin Garrett.

Secondary: Not bad, led by the Aubrey twins. Again lost a few good players last year, but have a few play makers back there.

All in all, the defense is still a question mark in my eyes. But our offense returns pretty much everyone from last season. It's our third OC in three years. Last years OC is now at UH...I mean...well never mind. But regardless, it's the same style of system. Just a lot of throwing. Lots of quick slants, screens, drag routes, then we'll catch you and throw it deep. Should be fun to watch regardless. Gilbert will be a good test for our defense. Line will be hard to stop, but I think if Jefferson can get some pressure on GG then it could be interesting.

Feel free to ask any questions about SFA. We're going to be setting up a tailgate on University and Airline (close to where our alumni association will be), so feel free to stop by if you see us. And of course, we'll make our way to the Boulevard later in the day, just wanted a tailgate of our own. And also, I am the admin of LumberjackFans.com, so feel free to join! See ya soon guys.

OK, you may test our corners and safetys but I see that style of offense being totally different that what Baylor comes at you with.

I expect to get pressure and SMU's fast LBs covering the short routes.
Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!!
