HOSED. right before the pivotal interception...
there was a total sandwich late hit on Gilbert well after he released a screen pass to Line by Baylor that even the TV announcers pointed out: NO CALL. total bullcrap. He looked rattled after that cheap shot too. I watched the tape too and yes Virginia, we got hosed. I can see now why Gilbert was gun shy and rushed those next two passes in the red zone, at that freakin point he knew the refs weren't gonna protect him, only Florence. Even so, there was only 2 minutes left in the half when the interception occurred. Watching the replay, we played them toe to toe for the whole first half. The interception changed everything. in the stadium, i had no idea that Gilbert had just taken a huge hit because the play was coming toward our sideline with Line.
And the late hit call on Reed was horrible. The running back kept running and was tiptoeing the sideline acting like he was cutting back. the running back didn't stop on the whistle, total crap. Then DJ gets reamed out of bounds at the same spot two possession later and no call, that's the problem. It is totally inexplicable really because it was the same referee on the same side of the field. watch it. any referee with a semblance of balancing things out would have called both ways on those plays.
whatever. Fairly proud of the effort for basically the whole first half after watching the tape and somewhat more optimistic about our team speed and toughness.

Forgot about the late hit call on Reed. I didn't think it looked like a late hit, but I was staring in to the sun, so I couldn't tell.Hoop Fan wrote:there was a total sandwich late hit on Gilbert well after he released a screen pass to Line by Baylor that even the TV announcers pointed out: NO CALL. total bullcrap. That the DJ-tossing contest didn't bring out a flag is still shocking. With the teams in different conferences, nothing will happen, even the gratuitous "apology" from one conference, but it was a joke and DJ could have really been hurt.

Re: HOSED. right before the pivotal interception...
nah, not really a sunshiner here. The DJ fumble was probably a fumble, the frustration from the SMU fans in attendance was the accumulation of all of the other calls and no-calls that went against the visitors. June is usually very laid back, but he was pissed and in some faces last night. And i really don't think he will back down from that after watching the tape either.
Re: HOSED. right before the pivotal interception...
True. I liked June's fire going after the refs, too. He looked pretty hacked off, and wasn't afraid to let them know. At one point, I was surprised he didn't get a flag.
And commenting on two plays hardly qualifies as sunshine. I had plenty of complaints about the game, but they weren't relevant to this thread.

Re: HOSED. right before the pivotal interception...
No doubt about it, the air went out after the goalline interception.
If you're going toe-to-toe with a superior team on their home field, that kind of play can lead to demoralization and unravelling.
Felt it in the stands, felt it on the field.
Didn't have the horses to come back or stem the tide...

HB, since the whole world clearly saw the same things, am I factually correct that the TV announcers pointed out the particular late hit on Gilbert that i am referring to? You can debate whether it had any bearing on Gilbert's next two critical decisions and throws, but i think it clearly must have. One thing i wish is that June would have called a timeout there to let GG regroup. The kid was trying to act too tough there.

Re: HOSED. right before the pivotal interception...
I believe the play before the INT (or it might have been the first time we had the ball inside the ten), there was a pass GG threw that looked awful down the middle. In reality, the corner held our slot receiver so that he couldn't make his break. The hold was halfway into the endzone, well outside of the contact area.

It is unfortunate that we tend to really eat our own after a poor Pony performance so lets all take a deep breath and chill!
I only reacted in response to this thread's titled of being "HOSED".
With respect to the TV announcers and the GG Blitz bang-bang marginal late hit I recall the announcer saying something to the effect of
and then commenting that JJ was too busy trying to get the next play called ASAP rather than bitchin' at the refs.you could have called a late hit on that play as well
The play was a blitz with two Baylor corners, as well as a lineman arriving within a heartbeat of GG's release.
The two corners momentum carried them into GG while the Baylor lineman collided with one of his own corners, GG took a tumble, but immediately got up and was no worse for wear. He wasn't rattled at all and was in no distress!
The only real "Hosing" occurred on the next two passes when DJ failed to catch two consecutive catch-able balls thrown by GG!
All on DJ and not GG!
The announcers were more outraged about the earlier obvious sideline face-mask which turned the SMU receiver's head 180 degrees; from that point on even marginal missed calls were pointed out by the TV announcers.
LETS ALL CHILL and STOP EATING OUR OWN!
BTW I was watching that entertaining VT-GT overtime game so I couldn't respond til now.

Re: HOSED. right before the pivotal interception...
i'll admit i thought it looked worse the first time i watched it, but it was more than a 'tumble' and more than just a heartbeat late. He got hit pretty hard, not viscous, but hard and late, the ball was way gone and they could have avoided. Point is, it was no different than the late hit on Grenier that extended the first Baylor possession of the game. All anyone wants is consistency, and there were some visible inconsistencies last night that did make a difference (they were basically spotted 7 points) and we were on the short end of which were frustrating.
Re: HOSED. right before the pivotal interception...
I was at the game last night and rewatched today.
I thought the late hit on Florence by Grenier was borderline. It was a late takedown, but only by a step, not two steps. I think what caused the official to throw the flag was the tackle was pretty rough. It looked like he came in and tried to wrap him up with one arm, but with the other he either horse-collared him or hooked around his neck and yanked him straight down.
The late hit on Reed was a tough call as well, especially when the RB keeps running after he has stepped out. If it makes you feel any better, the same thing happened to us at home last year against UT. Their RB gets to the corner, barely steps out, but tiptoes back in and keeps running. Our safety gives him a shot and he gets the PF call. I did notice in the replay that immediately after Salubi steps out, the ref had blown the whistle and ran up waving him arms to mark the spot, and then Reed pops him. Again a tough call, but after seeing the same thing last year, whether I agree with it or not, the refs do seem to be consistent on this call.
The late hit on #93 SMU...deserved. The Baylor WR Norwood caught the ball and was wrestled down, the whistle blew, then the DL comes running up and spears him. At least for SMU, that penalty offset with a BU penalty.
The facemask right before Gilbert's 2nd INT...obvious blown call. The guys head obviously spun around. After watching it a couple of times, it looked like the BU player that grabbed the mask had just gotten hit, either by an SMU blocker (#4) and the momentum was carrying him away from the play and he just reaches out and gets all facemask. I think it was inadvertent but it doesn't matter, still should've been a flag and 15 for SMU.
The hit on Darius Johnson where he fumbled - borderline, but a no-call was probably the right call, IMO. The biggest problem was the timing of the throw which led him into 3 BU players converging, two of whom hit him. There was some helmet-to-helmet between him and KJ Morton, but that seemed unavoidable since Darius dipped down a little at the very last second. While the play was being reviewed, the announcers commentary changed from helmet-to-helmet and facemask and not a fumble to where they ended up saying it was a fumble and a good defensive play. It looked like Ahmad Dixon has facemasked him initially, but after watching it, it appeared to me that he just had his hand on the side of the helmet behind the facemask.
I can definitely understand the frustration with the blown facemask non-call and a couple of borderline calls going against the Ponies, but after watching the replays, the officials also got plenty of calls right.

He made contact late, but hardly a spear. Looked more like he was about to hit hard and then let up, but coming into contact slightly late.

Had the official blown it down, the review wouldn't have been enough to overturn it. imo.

Re: HOSED. right before the pivotal interception...
A lot of no calls in that game...Baylor had about 5 headshots that weren't called. 2 facemasks also.
Re: HOSED. right before the pivotal interception...
Probably. One of those "too close to call so the field ruling is going to stand either way". I felt like it was coming out before he hit the dirt but it's definitely one where "conclusive evidence" is going to be hard to overturn either call.GRGB wrote:Had the official blown it down, the review wouldn't have been enough to overturn it. imo.
