Baylor-SMU Game

Post by johnbayBear »

I came over to the board yesterday but there was way too many upset people. First, I went to the game and one thing I believe all Baylor people agree with is how nice SMU fan base is. After dealing with TT and A&M it is a relief.

Baylor ran away with the game but SMU shot itself in the foot. SMU had golden opportunities early in the game squandered. Several things surprised me - Baylor OL was able to handle SMU DL. Perhaps our two young tackles are better than I thought. SMU LBs had a terrible night tackling. Salubi is slippery but time after time he juked SMU LBs to gain extra yardage.

It doesn't matter who is Baylor's QB, Briles, like Jones, is going to have a great offense. Most days you have to outscore Baylor. Gilbert was not sharp on short passes. He threw some terrific passes but there were several wide open WRs he missed in route. Lastly, SMU WRs didn't help at all. There were way too many drops. SMU OL looked really good and Zach Line is a BEAST.

Good luck to you guys and I mean it. I am so pulling for you against A&M.

thanks, bear...and I for one am looking forward to your game at West Virginia. promises to be a great track meet. I was very impressed by the pace of play on offense. Now that you've beaten us, I'd like to see Baylor go on to have a very special year.

Just a last note on JJ - some of you don't like him but everyone outside of SMU thinks he is a great hire and fit. Last spring was a disaster I agree but if JJ says he is committed I think he is.

On some thinking that SMU could match Baylor's talent, I don't know about that. Briles has put 5 players in the first round since 2009. He has at least several on this team that will play on Sundays. Baylor may have the deepest WR corps in the nation with speed galore.

Baylor returned 16 players from a team that won 10 games last year. I think you guys need to be patient and this is coming from someone furious at Briles last year after getting killed by OSU...again. After that we haven't lost a game. The season is long and Gilbert will improve.

thanks for the nice post. i have to say the baylor folks both before and after the game were great -

the emotion you have seen here is not due to losing - most of us understand Baylor was not all RGIII - but is a darn good program. But we did not expect to get our butts kicked - and that was embarrassing.

SMU excels academically to a degree no other private school in Texas has obtained (except the owls - but they are so goofy they don't count) - but in the stuff people really care about - football and basketball, Baylor owns us right now and that is tough to admit. we were all hoping we were closer - and although we did stop ourselves quite a bit, we clearly have a ways to go. The bellyaching is about a lack of emphasis on recruiting that we sense from our coach - so that is something that must change or it will be changed involuntarily.

Outsiders have no clue about this program and no stake, as far as most of them are concerned SMU is exactly where it should be (behind all major programs in the state) so it's difficult to take what they think about how well June fits here seriously. Anyone thinking that we could match Baylor's talent was on drugs, Baylor has recruited and developed talent much better than we have recently but that was only clear to a handful of our fans before the game. We've been patient but the results we want won't come with the level of effort currently being given.
