His argument doesn't even make sense. Total ignorance of why we were bad and the potential we have now. This season won't be a disaster but if it is, we will not downgrade in coaching.

Ponyfan777, people are going to vent after an emotional loss like that. If we did not vent I would be concerned that we were apathetic. By Thursday everyone should be okay.

Re: RICE vs. SMU= RICE WINS
Ponyfan777, you seem to be missing a fundamental difference between SMU and Rice and that is the element of expectations. Rice has accepted its place in a second-tier conference. Their "fans" are perfectly content with mediocrity and will show up, to some degree to see it, hoping for something better but content when they don't see it. For many years, the SMU fan base was in this same boat.
The legacy of June Jones, above anything else, is that he brought back a sense that SMU could be special again for the first time since the mud-1980's. For the first time since then, fans no longer hope for greater achievement, they expect it. Slightly above .500 seasons that were a dream not long ago are the minimum standard now. That SMU fans are demanding to get to that next milestone of being considered a legit national player again is both a testament to, and the burden of, June and his staff. Those of us who lived through the pain are both ecstatic for where we have gone and waiting for more; newer alums and students who have only known the recent success are completely justified in wanting to see that second step taken. This doesn't make for a "weak" fan base; it makes for a hopeful and demanding one. And I for one can live with that.

Amen Ryan! I agree 100%, but no fan owes 777 an explanation if he's willing to take a hike that easily!
Re: RICE vs. SMU= RICE WINS
Expectations get raised when you have the highest paid non BCS coach in the country at 2 million per year
When you build a $50 million stadium with state of the art locker room, weight room, and learning center
When you have raised the money for an IPF
Sorry but Rice has done nothing to give it's fans any hope and are essentially paying lip service to the older alums (whose demographic are the biggest contributors) who remember the glory years of the 50s and the SWC days.
JJ got us into the BE and did his job. Now he will retire at year end and go back to the islands and enjoy his retirement.

Too early to tell. If they come out of the first 4 at 1-3, they might get to 7 and get another slop bowl. Lose the first 4 and get blown out in 3, then 5 may be it. Better win Saturday or "the fit is going to hit the shan."
Re: RICE vs. SMU= RICE WINS
Ponyfan777 stop being such a troll. You say all SMU want to be like Rice and are quitters. Well isn't that exactly what you're doing? Either shut up and let us want bigger and better things for our school or go away
Re: RICE vs. SMU= RICE WINS
As a non-SMU type told me after the baylor game, SMU has a core of fans that is by far and away the best and most dedicated in the NCAA for standing by the program, the school, for as long as they have with so little return or lack of things athletic to be excited about.
I could not agree more. We may complain and [deleted] and moan, but we are still here. And those of us who were season ticket holders and road-tripers back in the '70's and had the chance to enjoy the very best of times, and have then had to swallow countless years of administratively induced apathy, certainly cannot be confused with anything other than the most ardent of supporters.
May we continue to complain, [deleted] and moan when applicable. It just means we care enough to get up and do/say something, versus sit on our butts with our mouths shut.

FYI - To be fair, Ponyfan777 did retract his statement:fratstang wrote:Ponyfan777 stop being such a troll. You say all SMU want to be like Rice and are quitters. Well isn't that exactly what you're doing? Either shut up and let us want bigger and better things for our school or go away
