X's, O's and QBs

Postby jettison » Wed Jul 24, 2002 12:45 pm

Surely everyone noticed the cute little story relating to Bennett's playbook in the Dallas Morning News on the same page as the WAC media poll.

You know, I think the problem former coaches (Cavan, Briner, Kueck) had is that they kept trying to be too innovative with their schemes.

I mean, a new play or two is always great, but trying to create this entirely new position of Quitterback just never really took off like I think our former coaches were expecting.

Hopefully, Wallis, Bartel and all the incoming quarterbacks never got a hold of any of these guides to offensive success. Granted, former Quitterbacks have gone on to great things like being all time DI-AA heroes and top draft picks and maybe even well paid accountants and rock stars... but is there really a need to subject oneself to such a humbling experience while on the hilltop?

So, here's to hoping that in Bennett's X's and O's, QB stands for Quarterback.

I agree, Cavan wasted a ton of talent. Thats why I think the program will turn around under Bennett's command. He won't waste the talent he has. I hope to see good things from the Ponies this year.

We know you don't want to see that much from us when we visit Fort Worth, but thanks for the encouragement.

That could be one of the best posts of this year. Surely for a long time. But more than anything about this circus at QB, Cavan got into an awful habit of declaring one guy his starter, and knowing his own job was on the line, forced each incoming freshman to compete for the job, when in essence they should have redshirted, grown up and developed naturally. McCown could have been great given the proper time to mature. I truly believe he could be getting ready to be selected in the first two rounds of next years draft. Luker, well, sometimes in recruiting, you hit and miss. We missed. But he still should have been redshirted. And how ignorant or hard-headed is Rick Alonzo? The band is Submursed, yet he continues to miss that one. And the quote in the paper, "We're gonna move down there and write music and record a CD, I guess." This situation is concerning as this young man suddenly ends his college career to head to Florida to record a CD, or so he guesses? Good luck.

Funny how in the early 90's it was Ramon Flannigan you was at SMU for what seemed like two careers. What was it, 7 years or so? And the last four qb's have yet to stay long enough to graduate. Here's to Bartel and Wallis sticking it out until graduation!

Page graduated with a 3.8 in a very difficult field and did secure a job with one of the top accounting firms in the U.S, the same firm now paying for his MBA at the University of Virginia, so at least structure your post on some more firm points. But Bartel and Wallis, do give us four more good years whether the two of you are starting, backing up, changed positions or whatever the reason, please do yourself a favor and finish school and play a little football while on campus.

Sorry Horizon, my fault. I guess I really was talking about playing through their senior year, which the last four qb's have failed to do.
