With all this talk about Eric Dickerson, I wondered... Who would I want to see from SMU's past on the sidelines at an SMU game talking to the players and being interviewed by the media? Who would best represent the school and exemplify SMU's true spirit to the public? (of course, this would have to be a living example...so choices like Doak Walker and Kyle Rote are exempt.)
My choice: Don Meredith.
"Dandy" Don Meredith is from East Texas. True, he now lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. But he's a 'legend' in Dallas. Better for SMU to tap into him than the Dallas Plowboys! And I believe most players know who Don Meredith is...either from NFL Monday Night Football or NFL Films or the Dallas Cowboys, etc. Don Meredith is also great in interviews! He knows the art of being on TV and I'm sure he's got LOTS more stories to tell about his days at SMU and in Dallas. I thought it was pretty pitiful when he and former Dallas Cowboys QB Roger Staubach were at the SMU v. Navy game and almost all of the media gravitated towards "Roger the Dodger" instead of "Dandy Don" for interviews. Heck, Staubach lives in the D-FW area and is almost always available to the media! So...let's get "Dandy Don" Meredith involved in SMU again...not for every game but at least for a few!
Who would your choice be? and why?

Good choice..... but players know who he is from Monday Night Football? Wasn't he retired at least 15 years before anyone in highschool was born?!?

Oh, c'mon...don't you think they've seen Dandy Don and Howard Cossell and Frank Gifford in replays/reruns/highlight films? Well...maybe not. But their parents sure do remember!

CRAIG JAMES!!!
Also, it would be nice to see on occasion, Forrest Greg, Eric Dickerson, Don Meredith, Jerry LeVias, Hayden Fry, Lance, etc.
In working with Jerry LeVias on The Mustang Band Partnership, it was absolutely amazing to find out that he was always willing to help, just nobody asked him. I think the AD should send formal requests to the SMU greats asking them to make cameo appearances at football games.
They could visit the boulevard, make announcements at the game that they are in attendance, make a handwave to the crowd at halftime, provide a seat in the presidents private suite (or in the stadium club). Just invite them, provide the best accomodations, acknowledge their attendance, cater to their egos, and make them really feel welcome.
Just send 'da money.

Louie Kelcher, Putt Choate, Michael Carter. Get some big body Defensive players out in front. Then ED, James, Lance Mc. I would then get some high profile people like Lamar Hunt more visible if they were comfortable in that role.
Behind the scenes I would hope that we showcase our many lawyers, doctors, and business professionals (as well as other successful alumni) to the kids. Let then know that one gets more than a hook 'em horns pat on the back when their eligibility runs out. And UT seems to love to hang on to players till their eligibility runs out and has no concern to graduate players. I would let kids know that they have a better chance of become the most famous Longhorn to drive a beer truck at UT then at SMU.
I would also parade the many professional successful former athletes in front of the faculty. That way, when those dimwits academic types decided to voice concerns over academic success, some real world successful people can then say, "Look what SMU did for me."

If you're going to add in the greats of all time from SMU, perhaps Raymond Berry might be added to the list. Until players like Art Monk and Jerry Rice came along, he was the benchmark for wide receivers in the NFL.

You may want them on the visiting team sideline, but I want them someplace else. Like my lap, just not all at the same time.
No need to fight ladies, there is plenty of the Governor for each of you...
