Who was the last great SMU bomber?

The Toledo game made me wonder when was the last time SMU had a truly great shooter. They made something like 9 of 16 threes. Elsey was supposed to be a great shooter, but he flamed out. Miller, injury induced flame out. I really can't recall a great shooter here since little guard who played with Poerner (Chad Allen?) Certainly, there were no great shooters during the Sasser/Hancook/BHop years. Today, SMU scratched and clawed to tie it twice in the second half only to see Toledo come right back with a three. It was brutal! A cold hearted 3 point bomber is a really great asset. Toledo had about four of them, as did LaTech and Hawaii. It seems like SMU has fewer tools in its toolchest without a true shooter.

I won't count Stephen Woods because he didn't shoot a very high percentge, although he hit a lot of 3's. I'll go with Dave Piehler. He was scary when he was "on".

Stephen Woods MADE more than anybody in history (he also shot more than anybody)....Longino had the best PERCENTAGE....Troy Matthews was pretty durn good, as was Chad Allen....

how great would Gene Phillips have been with a 3 point line? For those who saw him play, gotta believe Gene would have been the greatest 3 pt shooter in SMU history.

Longino was smooth and effortless -- kind of looked like Dale Ellis flipping 3s up there. But for my money, give me Todd Alexander. He was short, left-handed and could flat fill it up. Kato was a better all-around player, but Alexander was by far the better long-range shooter.

I do not know that Phillips ever missed from the corner which would be a 3 today. I believe he would have fared well with the three point line.

Before he got hurt, Brian Miller had a great-looking 3-point shot, and made enough of them to at least be encouraging for the future. Sure wish he hadn't gotten hurt.

If it is the one I remember best, the defender actually pushed him in the chest as he shot. No foul was called and Gene ended up about 3 rows into the stands. Nothing but net.

What about Scott Johnson from the Koncak/Wright team? Does anyone remmember him. He was deadly from outside. So was Kevin Lewis, for that matter.

I've been watching basketball here at SMU since 1968 and I've never
seen anyone shoot as well as Gene Phillips. He could hit from anywhere.

After they installed the 3 - I would have to say Todd Alexander was the
best I have seen.

There was also A guy who was here only 1 year I believe named
Mike Wilson who played for Shumate - he was a shooter.

David Piehler was the natural shooter when he came in as a freshman;
however, Bliss ruined his instincts by controlling his shooting and
insisting he pass the ball several times before taking a shot - controlled
offense and that took away his natural rythym. I think he still hit 20-25
points in his last home game against Texas as a senior./

Chad Allen, Longino, Billy Allen, and Zack Thiel were all good - some played without the 3 pt. line.

That's my two cents for what it is worth.
