Non-conference schedule

Post by Donnell88 »

SMU is paying the price for a challenging non-conference schedule, as compared to Alabama who plays Florida Atlantic, Western Kentucky and Western Carolina (as well as Michigan). Any wonder we're 1-2 now?
And yes, I'd feel a lot better if the losses weren't so lopsided.

By year five, this should not of been as challenging as SMU has made it. Both games we're completely over before halftime, and we looked completely outclassed.

Even Sam Houston State was able to manage a two score lead on Baylor at the half.

Exactly 35, we were a swc team so should we assume we can never compete against teams we always played. It shows the great divide between the non important conferences and the big boys. Our 3 mediocre bowl team got trounced by teams that played low level major bowl games. There is no excuse for how unprepared, low recruitment talent etc. if we were paying JJ 500k I would expect more along the teams we've had but 2 mil? Never. Better spent on things that can attract recruits: IPF etc

Completely agree with comparing our schedule to Alabama's. CUSA regular schedule is only a tiny small step behind the SEC's conf schedule. :)

I 'm not upset that we are 1-3, I'm bummed because our offense is 0-3 in those games.
And our recruiting has taken a step backwards.

Next year we need to buyout of at least the Tech and aTm games. Then replace them with an FCS school since the NCAA allows one per year to count and a lower tier MAC or WAC school. This would give the team some warm up games. Also, I think we should play the FCS school first to get an wrinkles smooth out. That would guarantee 2 wins and with us playing Memphis probably 3 wins. 3 guaranteed wins helps with the we are trying to get to 7 win for a bowl.

I completely agree. I wish we could have played tech last year but we should end those two try to get Baylor game before TCU then play 2 cupcakes to build confidence and identify weaknesses.

Bama has a horrible time getting anyone to schedule them. They have gaps in their schedule and have to go out and "pay" teams to head to Tuscaloosa. Nick Saban will always have at least one heavy on the schedule. With the SEC likely going to 9 conference games this will help a bunch. Everyone is disgusted with playing directional state games. Will SMU have to play 9 conference games in the Big East? And this schedule is way too much. One tough game (TCU) and then two easier games would be perfect until we improve a lot.

Woah woah woah woah. The offense may be 0-3, but the team is 1-2. For now.

ULM had a tough time with Arkansas and Auburn -- NOT! Almost 2-0 in SEC, very close.
Their Baylor game might even be interesting.

The simple fact is we should not get BLOWN OUT by these opponents in year 5. This the reason for the uproar.

Offense is 0-3 and defense is 2-3 this giving us our record 1-3

At this point I don't see the point in talking about/or complaining about a rough OOC schedule when the facts are that SMU can't run the table on a crappy CUSA. We all are dying to be much better than we really are.

wait, reality? are we facing it finally?

we're mediocre.

we're the tween at the kids table at Thanksgiving - wishing we could sit with the grown-ups. but here we still are at the kids table with the 8 year olds. just kids. maybe a little bigger, but not as big as our heads are telling us.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

Good one. But if they don't start recruiting, it will be more like: The dogs out on the porch with their noses against the door, wishing they were at the kids table.

Ok you bunch of chickens....following that line of thinking let's drop down to the Sunbelt and try to dominate and win every game in the future. SMU has the potential to be a national championship contender....but also to be a perrenial loser. We have the same number of scholarships available as Notre Dame , USC, UT, Alabam and LSU. So what does it take to contend....players, coaches, fans, facilities and you can win it all! It is so easy but everyone has to be on the train going in the same direction or it doesn't happen and it won't happen overnight.
