2:43 pm on September 25, 2012 | PermalinkGary Patterson was a kinder, gentler rival on Tuesday afternoon.
The TCU coach who went on a rant after a 40-33 OT loss to SMU last season, all but apologized for his antics as he prepared for the rematch with the Mustangs.
"If I was going to do the press conference over again last year, what I would tell you after watching film is SMU kicked our butts. Both sides of the ball," Patterson said.
Last season, Patterson was not in a happy mood. In addition to being upset with the officiating crew from Conference USA, he also said he wasn’t happy with comments from SMU coach June Jones.
"June Jones said we never change," Patterson said after the loss last year. "I think June Jones is 1-8 against TCU since he was at Hawaii (and SMU). I don’t think he’s changed that much either. … I don’t go there.
"You didn’t hear me say anything in 2005 after they beat us and their former coach Phil Bennett said ‘TC-Who?’ All I know is I can name the three losses I’ve been involved against SMU in 14 years."
Patterson even said last year he would no longer be helping his neighbors to the East.
"We’re going to go on about our business, but they’re not going to get the same help anymore - not about a ballgame, not about conferences, not about anybody. They’re getting no help from Gary Patterson, period," he said. "They shouldn’t ask me at SMU about going into a conference, they shouldn’t ask me about how they play, they shouldn’t ask me about their players, they shouldn’t ask me about anything because they’re not getting any help, period, anymore. Because we’ve bent over backwards to make sure that they can improve their program because I believe that’s what you do. To be honest with you, a lot of old alumni remember SMU people who looked down on TCU for a long time. I didn’t have that feeling, but I’m getting it."
Patterson said he has since spoken with Jones and smoothed out feelings over what he said was a misinterpretation of Jones’ comments.
"I apologized to June Jones, but I can just call him on the phone, I don’t have to do it in front of a camera,’’ Patterson said. "If I’m going to be the person I’m going to be and I’m going to teach young people I have to act right, too. It’s as simple as that.’’
Patterson said he believes the relationship with SMU will continue to be a strong one.
"In this world, wins and losses is what keep our jobs, but in the end it’s what kind of person you are,"Patterson said. "For us, there are a lot of Dallas and SMU people that have been good to us here. I’ve talked to a lot of them in the last 365 days. No matter what they say or how they do it, I’m in a position where you are supposed to act better. At least for three hours on game day. I can’t make any promises on game day."
That said, he was adamant that the game was poorly officiated by a Conference USA crew.
"One thing I wouldn’t take back is the officiating,’’ he said. "After that whole situation I don’t think I ever got an apology (from Conference USA). We will leave it at that."
The game this season will be officiated by a Big 12 crew.

In his 12 years as head coach, Gary Patterson concedes, he has lost his cool twice in front of the media after a game.
The first came in September 2006 after TCU beat Texas Tech 12-3. The Horned Frogs were embarrassed by Mike Leach's Red Raiders 70-35 in 2004 and Patterson was tired of a lack of respect for his program.
"People have been underselling our kids for years," Patterson said after the game. "All everybody wants to talk about is the Big 12. I get tired of being treated like a stepchild in this state and in this town, and our kids do too."
The second came last year after SMU beat the Frogs 40-33 in overtime at Amon G. Carter Stadium, TCU's first home loss in four seasons and only its seventh home defeat under Patterson.
But the 15th-ranked Frogs (3-0) are doing their best to downplay the rivalry, which is renewed at 6 p.m. Saturday at Ford Stadium in University Park.
"If I was going to do a press conference over again last year what I would tell you is after watching the film SMU kicked our butts on both sides of the ball," Patterson said during Tuesday's media luncheon.
A year ago, Patterson fumed about a lack of respect coming from SMU and intimated that he wasn't interested in helping the Mustangs program in the future. The schools have games scheduled through 2016. This week, Patterson said he apologized to SMU coach June Jones and wishes he had kept his comments behind closed doors.
"Am I still disappointed in some things? Yeah, but the bottom line is if I want to do that I can just call [Jones] on the phone. I don't need to say it in front of a camera," Patterson said. "If I'm going to be the person I'm going to be and I'm going to teach young people to be the right people then I've got to act right, too. Simple as that. But I'm still not taking back what I said about the officials."

Love his fire. That's what the SMU football program needs - an attitude with a chip on its shoulders. That emotion "trickles down" onto the team. If you can't recruit to your competition, you are going to have to want it more than your competition and as the wins pile up and that attitude gets contagious throughout the alumni-base and broader community, your recruiting picks up. That's how TCU did it. Depressing that they got so ahead of us the last 10 years.

Well, one thing is clear: fire is not a sufficient condition for winning.

I know we rag on Patterson alot on this board but he is one of the best coaches in the country. One of my favorite things he does is call a timeout and bring his team to the sideline when the wheels come off and chew some major butt. I wish June had done that during Baylor's first drive.

A+
Patterson knows what it takes to win on a consistent basis and goes into every game with his team expecting to do so. June............not so much.

It sounds like he didn't really apologize, he said he wished he had made made his

On the radio this morning they said he apologized directly to JJ and that they played golf in May of this year.
