Venting
First I've been a June supporter since the day he was hired. I think he's done a lot of good for the program overall. But there were some serious issues tonight, that we've unfortunately seen too much of lately. TCU did everything they could to give us that game and we threw up all over ourselves in every phase except the defense.
1. Garret Gilbert is not a good QB. I can't figure out why anyone was ever high on him. Yes, he's got a strong arm, but his accuracy and decision making suck. What's really frustrating is he was this way at Texas. Seems like we got all excited to get a kid that was a UT player, but he stunk there and he hasn't been any good here.
2. Why hasn't June recognized this yet and tried another option? Last year Padron had two bad series and never really got back in the game after that; June made a change in that case probably too quickly. Yet Gilbert has played like crap in our only three games that have mattered so far and it seems June is married to him. Why? Try something different if it's not working!!!
3. Our play calling is very unimaginative. We tend to run on first down, and then throw on second and third. We don't seem to vary much from this. 1st and goal at the 1 and we for the first time I can remember put the QB under center and run straight up the gut? Against that defense? Talk about telegraphing the play; at least stay in shotgun so there's the threat of a pass.
4. Our game management is so poor. We somehow by a miracle and some good defense have a chance to kick onsides, recover and score with three timeouts to tie. Then we waste a timeout on the kick because we have the wrong people on the field. Are you serious??? The onsides attempt after the timeout was atrocious. I thought that maybe in the timeout they saw something that could have been exploited, like trying to pooch kick it over their heads because they had 9 guys within 20 yards of the line of scrimmage. Nope, we dink it too short. Now we only have 2 timeouts. We still manage to get the ball back with a chance to tie but with no TOs left. Again great defense!! We had over a minute left and ran only 4 plays. An 8 yard pass no where near the sideline. A sack that you absolutely can't take. Then how does DJ not know where he is on the field and the situation? If you're falling down and short of the first down, drop the ball and stop the clock!!! We dropped balls all night, why didn't we drop one there on purpose?? Killer.
5. Well coached teams figure out a way to win that game. It's a rivalry game, and we're clearly outmatched from a talent perspective, but due to bad weather, poor TCU special teams play and great SMU defense we had great chances to win. Multiple times. I can't make any more excuses for June at this point.
Frustrating to lose a game by repeatedly getting in your own way.

Re: Venting
TCU tried like hell to give us that game. We just had no chance on offense.

Re: Venting
Very good points. Hard to argue with any of that.
The onside kick circus at the end was nice icing on the cake for those of us who stayed until the end.
From the timeout to the illegal formation to the return of the Namdar Special I can't imagine how we could have botched it any worse.

Uh really good points? Your kidding right? I will start off by saying I agree with you on not liking JJ but not because of GG... Put Troy aikman in there and those soccer player WR would still drop everything as if it were a freaking soccer ball... They were atrocious so much so that even GG 4 nits and 2 were clearly stupid were minuscule to how horrible our WRs were. Fortunately for people actually at the game they would see this... Sorry dude but GG deserves better analysis from you...

Re: Venting
The main problem is GG is throwing OVER-HAND...maybe if he tried throwing under-hand instead, it would be easier to catch...

Re: Venting
I don't understand if he throws it too lightly the receiver will give up and tcu will come in and snatch it, I mean they need to suck it up and catch a bullet whatever, things aren't always gift wrapped. I mean seriously getting 4 kids from the stands have a better shot at catching than these clowns whoever over them scholarships during recruitment are probably excited they didn't get stuck with them

Re: Venting
Also "TCU" is flashing on Reunion Tower. You know what Dallas says to our "SMU is Dallas' Team" campaign? "Yeesh, no thanks!"

Re: Venting
TCU was not only a better team physically but they are in a major rebuilding year and are playing something like 10-15 frosh and sophs. Really shows how terribly poor jj has recruited.

Re: Venting
First, I noted how many dropped balls there were, and you're right it was atrocious. But where you're wrong was that you didn't have to be at the game to see what was going on. Troy Aikman would've put the ball on his receivers a lot more than GG did (and they might still drop it). GG missed a lot of passes to open receivers. Several were point blank throws and some were tougher on the run throws, but never the less he missed a bunch of them. He's been missing a bunch of throws all year. He's been late a lot on throws and high a lot on throws to the outside.SMU_Alumni11 wrote:Uh really good points? Your kidding right? FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MAN HIS TD TO INT RATIO IS 4 TO 9. That's inexcusable.

Re: Venting
actually last nite-throwing bad passes should have been expected. Casey Pachall who was leading NCAA in Passing Percentage had the worst nite of his career. His only real downfield throw was a Dead Duck thrown up between 4 players. All SMU QBs under June Jones have performed terribly under poor weather conditions. An offense that requires a team to throw 40 passes-including those ridiculous bombs-under last nite's conditions are likely to have more turnovers and lose. But June Jones' system has no Plan B.

Re: Venting
Game report from that UH/Rice game. It reports that Keenum had two turnovers in worst conditions and Rice led 17-7. Sumlin in his headset says surely we aren't going to have bad weather all nite. Then he says someone upstairs must have been listening because conditions improved. I remember watching game but can't remember exactly the conditions were later. Here is the excerpt from link below:
Keenum threw an interception and had a fumble returned for a touchdown in the first quarter in heavy rain as Rice built a 17-7 lead.
With the rain at its heaviest, Sumlin expressed his disbelief at the weather into his headset.
"I said: 'Surely it's not going to be like this all night. It can't rain like this all night,'" he said. "I guess somebody heard me because it started to stop after that."
Then the Cougars got going. They outscored Rice 45-3 to take a 52-20 lead by early in the third quarter and cruised to the easy victory to remain undefeated.
