Gregory in one year takes SMU to # 2 in the Nation!

Post by ponyscott »

Okay so this isn't about Football but it serves to just show that with the right coach with the right attitude and 'go for it spirit' on recruiting, you CAN work an SMU team up the National rankings...Josh Gregory was only hired by SMU in the Summer of 2011 and SMU is already ranked #2 in the Nation in Golf only behind California! During Gregory's first full season at SMU, he led the team to its lowest scoring average in school history, as well as the most rounds under par. He was also given the honor of coaching the 2012 U.S. Palmer Cup team:

SMU Heads To Illinois For Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational
Mustangs Enter Tournament As No. 2 Team In GolfStat’s Computer Rankings

Sept. 29, 2012
OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. (SMU) - SMU is well-rested for its second tournament of the season as it heads to Olympia Fields, Ill., for the Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational Sunday through Tuesday.

The Mustangs enter the event as the highest-ranked team in the field according to GolfStat’s Relative Rankings, at No. 2 in the nation, only behind California. SMU is joined by Arkansas, Auburn, Augusta State, Clemson, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Purdue and Stanford to fill out the Olympia Fields field. Stanford won last year’s event by 16 strokes over Auburn. To say the group of teams participating is a strong bunch is an understatement. Out of the 14 squads, six were in the pre-season Golf World/Nike Coaches top-25, and two others received votes.

“This will be a great test,” Head Coach Josh Gregory said. “It will be one of the best fields in college golf all year. This is a big-boy event.”

The three-day event is being held at the Olympia Fields Country Club South Course and is hosted by the University of Illinois. Fans can follow the scoring live each day at GolfStat.

Lineup notes:

Bryson Dechambeau – Fr. – Clovis, Calif.
Finished fifth at the Gopher Invitational on Sept. 10, finishing with a 2-over 218 (76-69-73).

Harry Higgs – Jr. – Overland Park, Kan.
Tied for sixth at the Gopher Invitational, posting a 3-over 219 (76-69-74).

Ryan Burgess – Fr. – Sante Fe, Calif.
Tied for ninth at the Gopher Invitational with a 5-over 221 (78-69-74).

Austin Smotherman – Fr. – Loomis, Calif.
Tied for 12th at the Gopher Invitational with a 6-over 222 (77-68-77).

Mario Clemens – Sr. – Beverly Hills, Calif.
Will be making first start as a member of the SMU Mustangs after transferring from UCLA… Ended the 2011-12 season ranked 58th by GolfWeek and 74th by GolfStat… Head Coach Josh Gregory says that Clemens will bring experience, maturity and leadership to the team.

GO MUSTANGS!
- Josh Gregory, Head Coach
- Jason Enloe, Associate coach

Yes he was a great hire. And you make a good point about our potential. Also, look at what Larry Brown is doing with his staff and in recruiting. Though he has not landed a top recruit, they are getting after it on recruiting and we will eventually see the results.

I think that's what is driving so many of us crazy with the state of the football program right now. I've been very critical of the nay-sayers on here regarding firing JJ, etc, but I'm now agreeing with you. SMU can do much much better. It deserves better. It has the resources, the facilities, the campus, the market (and seems to now have an AD that "gets it" in terms of marketing). No reason SMU can't be that "cool" school every recruit wants to go to -- start right away, big fish in small pond, great education/connections, good extracurriculars, etc etc . . .

Only problem, we lost Dallas. They lit up TCU on reunion tower, enough said.

Yes, I agree. But Dallas fans are fickle. They can be gotten again with a couple of great seasons (and some signature upsets) . . . something we thought we'd all be getting by now.

it would only take one great win. Just one of the opportunities we had this year so far would have the town buzzing again. instead we got crickets for the next 8 weeks.

More than that, winning CUSA will do nothing. Winning a mediocre bowl (if we win CUSA) will give us the step child award. Right now we are the dirty little orphan that nobody wants to be associated with. We have to hope and pray that if we get a new coach it causes spark in the city and we come out blasting in next years OOC and BE scheducle. Or.... JJ with a miracle, finds O and D 1st string gems over the spring and comes out challenging these teams that we need to be competitive with...

Are you kidding? You compare a sport with 5-6 players vs a sport that depends on 85? I noticed some underclass men on the roster. You get 2-3 good ones and you are set. In football, you get 2-3 good ones and you get what you have now. Try turning a program around with 2-3 recruits. Delete this thread for stupidity.

F you...the point is SMU CAN turn it around and become a National known power.....even in football. 5 or 6 wins doesn't make it anymore. Use your head... I am not comparing a golf team to football team, but the point is made...delete your post for idiocy.

You must have been on a golf team. I won't respond to your vulgarity, I have to consider the source. You never played football in college and you do not know any better. Wash your mouth out with a revolver.

the point that apparently escaped you Gotcha - is that there is an intense emphasis on recruiting from our excellent golf coach - and that paid off in short order. No such energy has been seen for football since JJ's arrival.
