1st and Goal offense on the 1

Re: 1st and Goal offense on the 1
When the Houston Oilers operated the run n' shoot in the late 1980's and early 1990's, they put in what was called a "Jumbo Package" or "Red Gun" package when inside the five yard line. Basically they put in double tight ends and put in two or even three backs and powered it in. At first and goal you run out of field to do the run n' shoot, so you power it in. The Steelers once loaded 10 in the box on the Oilers Jumbo Package and Warren Moon just found the one receiver who wasn't covered for a TD. Saturday night we could have had two backs in there with at least one tight end and either scored on the ground or Gilbert could have hit a guy who was open if TCU loaded up the box with eight or nine players. If they know you are going to power it in there and they load the box.......somebody's always open! June Jones knows all those coaches from the Oilers Run n' shoot days, so I can't figure out why he thinks we can run an offense at the goal line with only five offensive lineman for four plays.

"June: I should have run it, uhh, on 2nd down when we, when we fum-, when we got that ball on the one yard line, I should have, I should have run it there.
Reporter: On that drive, on first and goal, uhh, from the 2, it seemed that they almost expected to run the ball there. Did you think about doing anything else there, maybe play action, or...?
June: No. (pause) You'd like to be able to think that you can get a yard, you know, after you....and I should have run it again, but...I went into the game saying that I was gonna do that, but when we got stuffed and actually it looked like we lost a yard on the play I kind of went away from what I said I was gonna do."
Why even have a gameplan if you're going to make decisions like this? By that logic, everytime GG throws an incomplete pass, you can't throw it on the next down. Can't wait to see what kind of magic he has cooked up for UTEP.

You notice TCU had a play action and scored easily on the pass. JJ it only works if you try it. Crazy we dont have the same thing so the D cannot just focus on stopping Line or going all out on a pass rush.

Re: 1st and Goal offense on the 1
Coach Jones has had success for years creating mismatches with his Run & Shoot. Honestly, its hard to tell whether or not, for the most part, if JJ just does not have the QB and WRs to run it this year, or whether opposing coaches are just doing a better job defending this somewhat outdated offense. Most productive spread offenses today have multiple formations and, on the goal line, a power formation with TEs and it helps on the goal line to have a 260lb. lead back. I just can't figure out why he just continues with this basic R&S offense in all game situations ?

Against TCU 2 years ago one the goal line Padron rolled out to his right and threw a TD. I was hoping GG would try that rather than standing in the pocket.

June has put his top choice at QB every single year here. Their quality is on him.
