Are we a service academy?
The service academies acknowledge that due to their very nature they can't recruit quite like a top program, so they run a version of an ancient offense to be unusual and try to make up for poor talent.
June said at Hawaii he couldn't recruit due to money and timezone, but the ran run 'n shoot to make up for lessar talent. The pure R'nS went away 20+ years ago. It is ancient.
The two coaches we know that were prime head coach candidates: June and Paul Johnson. Hawaii and Navy. Ancient and Ancient.
Does the administration believe we can NEVER recruit well?

The administration knows we can never recruit well. Or at least not right now. That's not something you are going to blare out to the masses. That's why head cheerleader Rick Hart isn't running June out of town like everyone on pf seems to want.
Re: Are we a service academy?
No, this is crazy. We can get almost any player in at this point. June just isn't recruiting like he should.
Why would anyone expect Hart to run Jones out at this point? Even Orsini left Bennett in place for another season after coming in. The guy has been on the job like 2 months..give him a chance and stop being an internet tough guy.

Re: Are we a service academy?
Wasn't TCU sort of like us? Of course they didn't experience the death sentence, but that happened decades ago. TCU was at or near the bottom, a small church school, in the DFW metroplex, decent academics, small alumni base, 2nd tier conference, ect....and they focused and made it happen. TCU didn't believe they could "never recruit well"....why should we be any different than TCU? The one good thing about having TCU around is when the excuse makers start talking we can always say "well TCU did it...why cant we"?couch 'em wrote:Does the administration believe we can NEVER recruit well?

Re: Are we a service academy?
SMU can and should recruit better ... Top 60 University, drop death gorgeous campus, Big D, football tradition, BE, national media, a rebuilt brand, emerging from the Dark Ages, ...
Opportunities for improvement? Energize the student body, look for Power conference foes and beat them and have JJ engage more than the just the team. Be ready when JJ/we decide it's time to Pony Up the next staff.

Yall are right...but if you just sit on your aging rear ends and wait for the kids and their families to come to you then you are gonna have mediocre recruiting results at best....even if you are legends in your own minds.
Re: Are we a service academy?
Well JJ is no longer on the islands and has no excuse now. There honestly should be decent recruits lined up for SMU. I think the Ponies could run the Air Raid though.

Re: Are we a service academy?
For many years TCU was academically inferior to SMU. That is part of why our model was more like Rice than TCU. At this point, I have to believe that SMU can get some solid players in and can teach them. It may require a ton of remedial work, but we ought to be able to do it. The other problem is that players want to play in the SEC, Big XII, PAC 12, and Big Ten. The ACC and BE are now the next rung down and CUSA/MWC the next rung down. We're still in the south end of the horse.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Why would you say we can't recruit well at SMU?

Never is a strong word, look at the basketball staff the boosters paid for. That staff wasn't put together to recruit like an Ivy and run the Princeton. The same can be done for football.

If we are we are the worst one. Isn't J like 0-5 against them during his time here? Couldn't even beat Army at home...

And TCU was recently in the Rose Bowl with great players
and was not in any of the elite conferences you mentioned.
The point being, TCU made it, why can't we?
