Media guide - did you know?

Postby Otto » Wed Jul 31, 2002 4:02 pm

I've been doing some heavy reading in preparation for the upcoming season. A few tidbits I never knew:

* CB Kevin Garrett graduated in the spring with a double major in marketing and psychology, and is now enrolled in the Master's of Liberal Arts program.
* DT Allan Adami's athletic bloodlines run deeper than I thought. We all know his brother Austin was a star offensive lineman at SMU. In addition, his father played football at Texas Lutheran, and he has uncles who played at Texas Tech and Texas A&M.
* DE Khalid Beard's nickname is "The Punisher."
* DT Warrie Birdwell answers to "Big Red" and "War Man."
* FB Kris Briggs' nickname is "Boogie."
* WR Cody Cardwell had 109 catches in his senior year at Stephenville High School (where, of course, he caught passes from Kelan Luker.) The 109 catches are the second-highest single-season receptions total in high school history, behind WR Abram Booty, who starred at Shreveport Evangel Christian before going on to LSU.
* OL Thornton Chandler's grandfather, Tommy Chandler, played for the New England Patriots.
* WR Chris "Comet" Cunningham's brother, James "The Jet," played with the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings and two CFL teams.
* OL Judson Davis' father, Kyle Davis, was an All-America lineman at Oklahoma.
* TE/HB Billy Ford's grandfather, Adolph Hryhorchuk, is a Texas Hall of Fame coach.
* DE Clay Glockzin's grandfather pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies, and he's a cousin of Rice defensive end Brandon Green.
* OL Townsend Hargis' father, Michael, coached at Middle Tennessee State.
* OL Sterling Harris' uncle is former Dallas Cowboys TE Billy Joe Dupree.
* DB Travis Hunt has great bloodlines: six uncles played in the NFL, and two cousins - WR Jabar Gaffney and DB Lito Shepherd - were drafted this year.
* LB Don Ieremia-Stansbury's middle name is Nephi.
* DB T.J. James was born in Great Britain.
* LB D.D. Johnson's initials stand for Devonric Datrel.
* LB D.D. Lee's initials stand for Deprimethon .... Vaughn? His cousin, Patrick Hughes, plays football for Florida State.
* FS Ruben Moodley was born in South Africa.
* WR Ashton Nixon's brother, Jarrett, is a WR at Tulsa.
* SS Alvin Nnabuife's cousin, Chike Ozumba, is a DT at Oklahoma.
* CB James Orr received the 2002 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports-Scholar Award, "presented nationally by 'Black Issues in Higher Education' to undergraduate students of color who exemplify excellence in academics, athletics and community service.
* TE Rob Presthus is the younger brother of former SMU soccer star Tom Presthus, who now plays goalkeeper for the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer.
* CB Jonas Rutledge chose SMU over Florida and Central Florida.
* DT Brian Small's sister, Alexis Small, plays women's soccer at SMU.
* OL Hulsey Smith's father, Flavious Jr., plaed TE at Vanderbilt and with the Denver Broncos; his grandfather, Flavious Sr., was an all-America at Tennessee Tech and played in the NFL with the L.A. Rams and the Pittsburgh Steelers. "Hulsey" is Smith's middle name, but his first name is William, not Flavious.
* WR Jay Taylor's first name is short for ... Johnny.
* QB Tate Wallis actually listed his nickname as "Tater Tot."

There you go, just some info to get you geared up for football season. More will be added soon.
I really shouldn't drink and type.

Imagine how the media guide would read if Rogers Healy had written it?

Brian Small is in the press book but is not listed in the roster found in the official website. I take it he is no longer with the team.

How do you get D.D. out of Deprimethon Vaughn?
"It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."
...
"Hit it."

Did it not mention that Thorton Chandler's dad played with the Cowboys?

How would we go about getting a media guide? I love reading the Texas and Rice one, does SMU give it out like other Texas schools?
I'm a tacklin' fool.

In the past, I've gotten one by stopping by the Sports Information office in Moody Coliseum. (Room 214, I think)
