The reason its possible is we know that Louisville and BYU have been under consideration for the Big 12 and will remain so. The PAC may not like BYU's religion, but that doesn't mean they want the Big 12 to take them. If the PAC wanted to block the BYU to the Big 12 possibility, they could pre-empt and take BYU and SMU to get to 14 and still have decent geography and high academics, as well as add a recruiting/tv market like Dallas. When you think of PACs options if BYU goes off the board, its not pretty really.

A)Conference membership is a voluntary association. Nobody is forcing BYU into anything that violates their religious beliefs.
B)The conference is a private organization, and can set their own rules. If they say they are going to play games on Sundays, that is their right. Any members or prospective members can take it or leave it or push from within to change it.
C)Having the US Court system dictate when football teams can or can't play games is absurd. Talk about intrusive government...

If that were true but being private doesn't exclude you from federal government reach given they use interstate commerce argument in the commerce clause. Thus all have to abide by federal laws on protected classes which one is religion. If the reason they rejected BYU was because of the no Sunday games perfectly makes sense but that wasn't there reason it was because they didn't like their beliefs and therefore purposely excluded them because of their faith. It's like restaurants that use to not serve African Americans, which we all know private or public is illegal. So I wish it was like you were saying in C but its not because of these rulings over the years

Of all the major conferences, the only one that would have even a slight interest in us is the PAC. We represent a new market, great academics, and (hopefully) competitive athletics. That said, it isn't going to happen unless we go on a TCU-esque run of dominance in the Big East. With June at the helm you can kiss that goodbye.

Mormons are not Christians.

Their church is called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I think you have Mormons confused with Muslims, whose religion also descends from Abraham and considers Christ one of many prophets but nothing more

Though they have the name they deviate to an extreme away from Christian theology. They hold that Joseph smith found inscription on golden bricks that only Joseph smith can read and the bricks came from the native Americans and I believe Jesus was in North America. They are more believable faith than Scientology how people believe in that is beyond me

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Actually SMT, SMU represents a new market for the ACC and one could argue the SEC. ACC appears concerned about academics; SEC I am not so sure.

As I see it, attendance is our biggest obstacle in upgrading conference membership. This issue is very similar to TCU’s. If the opponent does not travel well, attendance suffers. TCU witnessed that last weekend. I witnessed it many times during our Pony Express days. There is not one single existing new BE team that will provide a meaningful boost to SMU’s FB attendance.

Attendance issues would not be resolved with PAC12 membership. The PAC-12 does not have a large alumni base around DFW and for those on the left coast, Big D is hardily viewed as a desirable travel destination. To me this is our biggest obstacle with the PAC12.

Attendance issues become a thing of the past if we joined the SEC. There are many SEC alumni living around the DFW area and many more who would actually enjoy an extended weekend in Big D. Plus of course the SEC brand.

My hope is that ether the ACC or SEC would want to secure both the Dallas and Houston markets, by either adding SMU (SEC) or by adding both us and Houston (ACC). The question to me is if Houston’s low academics would prevent ACC membership...

And I agree with you that winning some meaningful games today would be helpful for our cause. But thinking longer-term, SMU has proven they will do what it takes to improve its athletic programs, so I don’t think our recent poor performance is insurmountable.

Thanks for getting this thread back on track. Was concerned about all the political stuff.

As always, GO USofA!!! Vote for whoever you want, that is our right... but remember we are all Americans, we all want what's best for the country. We get too blinded by "villainizing" the the other party.

That being said, GO MUSTANGS! ... and PAC-12?

;)
