Love Field Merchandising

Post by smusportspage »

Waiting for flight to El Paso, took a gander through one of the shops out at Love Field. Had your standard pro Cowboy and Ranger gear. On the college front, you had Texas, Texas A&M, Tech and then low and behold, you got TCU. I guess that is ok since they are in the Big XII but it sure would be nice to see some SMU merchandise. They are the home team! That is a fact.

I spose you could walk up, simply tell the manager "I want SMU gear. I will buy it. So will some of the 40K DFW alumni." Then hand him B. Sutton's card and tell him "Call this gentleman, and make it happen."

Sadly that never works, Ive handed his card and contact info and they usually chuckle and say your licensing has a problem etc etc, i know the real facts are they dont want smu, but handing him b sutton doesnt do anything

The GM wasn't in on Friday when I was there, but we exchanged emails this morning.

His response, in part:
"We have attempted to sell SMU apparel in the past with no success. That being said, I am a team player and will order some SMU tees and try again."

So, Mustang Nation, be sure to buy some SMU stuff when it arrives!

Thanks to all.

Why is it difficult to sell SMU apparel?
Even in the "bubble" of SMU, I saw more Highland Park posters/news, than I saw about SMU, much less shwag.
NOTE: I'm not being sarcastic or condescending. Just curious.

EDIT: Ryan98, in another thread, answered the question. No one's buying it.. or at least in high enough quantity.

I was in the Tom Thumb (or Kroger) on Mockingbird earlier this year. I noticed an SMU section. I went and bought something (not that I needed it) so tht there would be some sells of SMU stuff. When I can, I will buy from merchants to support SMU.

If you're ever in Plano, the Bed Bath and Beyond on 15th and Alma has been good about carrying the SMU Tervis cups. I pick up a couple whenever I am in there. Whatever we can do to prove to folks that the stuff will get off the shelves, do it!

Brad, this is why we need to start a "these retailers have a great selection of SMU gear. Support those supporting the Mustangs." section in emails to season ticket holders, Mustang Club members, and all SMU alumni.

And is there any way to get statistics on TCU "t-shirt" fans in Dallas -- ie, people with no affiliation with the school but are just buying their stuff. As good as they've been, I still don't think there are tons of non-TCU alumni buying their stuff (as opposed to buying Texas, A&M or others if someone were inclined to buy someone's merchandise). Are there more SMU alums in the areas within 10 miles of SMU than TCU alums? I just find it hard to believe that if stores in Dallas actually carried the same selection of SMU and TCU gear, there are THAT many more sales of TCU stuff than SMU stuff.

It's the same reason we play in front of small, quiet home crowds. It's a painful truth about most SMU alum. As proud as they are of their school, they are not wont to be "vocal" about it.
