BOYCOTT!I was in the Just For Feet athletic shoe store on Central Expy. this afternoon. Whenever I go into a sports store, I always check out the hats, because I wear a lot. But what I saw made me sick. I can almost stomach the presence of A&M and UT stuff in Dallas stores, because they're such huge universities and have enormous alumni bases in Dallas. But this store had A&M and UT hats - and TCU hats? - and no SMU. The store is five minutes away from campus, even when there's traffic on Central, and they not only DON'T have SMU gear, but they waste valuable shelf space with TCU stuff. Disgusting. I asked an assistant manager, and I was told "we're ordering" SMU gear. Yeah, right. I told him that I doubted him, and that if he wanted to pander to the Horns and Aggies of the world, that was one thing. But to offer stuff representing TCU stuff -- and not offer gear from the ONLY UNIVERSITY IN DALLAS -- is nothing more than a slap in the face.
I urge all PonyFans to boycott that store until they stock SMU items, and to frequent all of its competitors who do stock SMU items. Pass the word to your friends to not even buy shoelaces at Just For Feet. And, of course, help the SMU marketing push to make the program more visible in Dallas. Wear your SMU gear around town. Call sports talkshows asking about the Ponies. Do everything possible to get people talking about SMU.
Re: BOYCOTT!You're right, that's pathetic. I'll stick with Oshman's (they had SMU hats as of two weeks ago) or the Spirit Shop in Ford Stadium.
They carry Texas and Aggie stuff, but I guess that's going to be hard to change. But at least they're not carrying TCU instead of SMU. "What kind of weirdo school are they running over there in Fort Worth?"

Re: BOYCOTT!That's weird that a Dallas store isn't carrying SMU stuff. There are store down here that have lots of Mustang hats, shirts, etc. There's more SMU stuff at some of the stores here than Rice and Houston stuff. Of course, that's a matter of obviously good taste.
Re: BOYCOTT!Shame on SMU for doing such a bad marketing job......some things will never change. We are always going to protect the mom and pop stores the line Hillcrest, they thrive on being the only stores to offer SMU merchandise. If you want to complain and boycott then go to the source...i promise it isn't Just for Feet, Footlocker, or Academy.
Re: BOYCOTT!Lefty
What stores in Houston do you find a selection of SMU gear?
Re: BOYCOTT!If you're looking for 'ball caps' for SMU, try Lids. They've got stores in Houston and other cities around the country. I've bought at least FIVE different types of SMU 'ball caps' there over the past two years! Nice selections. In Houston, you can find them at these malls:
Baybrook Mall The Woodlands Mall West Oaks Mall The Galleria Willowbrook Mall You can also try their web site at www.lids.com GO MUSTANGS! ------------------ "Winning ain't everything...but it's a lot more fun than the alternative!"
Re: BOYCOTT!Shame on all you that say SMU has that much to do with what Academy and the like have in their stores. The best thing SMU can do is WIN. Why the crap would those stores put that stuff on their shelves when no one would buy it?
It does no good to boycott the store because they don't have SMU stuff. Instead frequent it asking for SMU gear. Then they will see a demand and generate a supply. With no demand there is no need for a supply. Done. [This message has been edited by Rambo (edited 08-15-2002).] Viva Ponyball!!!!!
Re: BOYCOTT!Does anybody know where you could buy old SMU jerseys.....what do they do with the jerseys after the season????
Re: BOYCOTT!I think you can still buy them through the Spirit Shop. At least a couple of years ago a friend of mine bought some that way. Bob Sharp even took us down to the locker room to let my friend pick out the ones he wanted.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: BOYCOTT!Some old SMU jerseys show up on www.ebay.com. However, you might want to check their authenticity before bidding.
You should do a 'search' on www.ebay.com sometime and see what's available when you type in 'SMU' or 'Southern Methodist University'! I got a MINT condition Wheaties cereal ad from a 1950 comic book with Doak Walker once! It's awesome! ------------------ "Winning ain't everything...but it's a lot more fun than the alternative!"
Re: BOYCOTT!Yo PK,
If you and Bob are so tight, YOU need to hook me up with a jersey!! Whatasteve has to date failed miserably in his jersey mission despite all his contacts. H. E. L. P. "It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller

Re: BOYCOTT!Who is Bob Sharp??? PK what year did you graduate???
Re: BOYCOTT!Bob Sharp owns the Spirit Shop.
I'm what you would call an old fa*t. Dec. 1967. You weren't even born when I graduated, but then age is a state of mind which puts me somewhere between 18 and 24. So we are probably equals. Re: BOYCOTT!I think you will like the SMU Bookstore on Mockingbird right out the east door of Ford Stadium. Terrific cap selection and ltons of other SMU stuff. Having Barnes & Noble take over has been really nice. Check it out!
P.S. You can bet I won't shop Just for Feet if they are peddlin' frog togs!
