Does anyone remember at the end of last year
Wondering how many pony fans remember at the end of last year, when Coach June Jones all but took the ASU job, until something happened on their end? I think it was and is very hard for any of our football team members to believe him in the locker room each week, when he's says, "we are all in this as a team together".

Re: Does anyone remember at the end of last year
My thought is that June Jones got sold a bill of goods by a deeply in debt drunkard who was desperate to make something happen. And then he got double crossed by ASU, who reneged on a clear promise. And then, after all he's done here, some SMU "fans" get selective amnesia as to who saved this program from extinction. The team is over it. Time you do so too.

Well it is not June Jones' offense that has turned things around for SMU that's for sure.ponyboy wrote: And then, after all he's done here, some SMU "fans" get selective amnesia as to who saved this program from extinction.

Your posts blow my mind. Almost oblivious to what has been said on this board over and over again.ponyfan777 wrote:Wondering how many pony fans remember at the end of last year, when Coach June Jones all but took the ASU job, until something happened on their end? The team is not over it. I don't know anyone directly but several recent grads around the company I work for have friends on the team, and believe me, it's not forgotten/ignored.
Give the players way more credit than that - they aren't fools.

The team IS over it. I don't know anyone directly but some of the sons of my wife's bridge club members who work for a major metropolitan company have best friends (forever) on the team and you can believe ME (I heard it indirectly from over 3 people and overheard 2 conversations at Goff's), it is over and done with - water under the bridge. Give the players credit - they aren't interested in all that soap opera bs.03Mustang wrote:The team is not over it. Even if that's true what are the players going to do about it exactly? The smart play would be to move on.

Think it goes back to the "swag" SMU had after the Nevada beatdown in the Hawaii Bowl, and JJ not bothering to follow it up by recruiting...Which is now working on 3 consecutive years on non-recruiting.

Well, I my wife's friend's sister has a freind whose brother knows a contractor (very successfull, BTW) who met a guy at the supermartket whose nephew works out with a guy whose best freind is on the team, and hear me now und believe me later, the players do not care. How can I not believe that.Bergermeister wrote:The team IS over it. Have a Nephew on the team (via Marriage). I talk to him regularly and many of the players. Its water under the bridge, not even sure it was as big of deal to them as we have made it out to be on this board. Many of these kids have professional dads or close family members that are, they understand in today’s world that people move on or consider it for what they believe to be a better fit for them.

Re: Does anyone remember at the end of last year
No doubt the situation was handled poorly by Steinberg, ASU and perhaps Jones as well.
But for whatever it's worth, all the players we've interviewed view June's flirtation with ASU as just part of the business and the "normal" byproduct of being a successful coach.
I personally believe that the team has long since moved past this and are focused on Houston and the rest of the season. I don't think any of us can say how the situation effected the personal relationship between Jones and his players, but I think it's safe to generalize and say the the ASU situation affected the diehard fans and June supporters who rightly or wrongly felt they were betrayed more so than his players.
Maybe I'm going out on a limb here, but I get a sense and I think it's fair to say that June has instilled a "professional" (i.e. playing on Sundays) culture/attitude on the team. The players have a job and responsibilities they're held accountable to. Maybe that translates into less passion than what you'd expect in a college team. But I do think that prepares players for the next step, and I do believe that "professional" culture allows players to understand June talking to ASU was just part of the business vs. having a purely emotional reaction to it.
That's just my 2 cents based on the discussions we've had with dozens of players. I have no magic insight into the inner workings and thoughts of anyone.

Re: Does anyone remember at the end of last year
The real problem with this team has nothing to do with the ASU situation. They are over it. Sure we run a somewhat outdated offense without multiple formations, which a lot of people run as part of their offensive package. It appears fairly easy to defend this year, but it wasn't easy to defend last year at times such as against TCU etc...Why ? Our Defense is good...The real problem is we don't have a Leader at Quarterback this year now. The young man is Not Confident as leader of the offense in games. In fairness, he plays well some of the time in games, then at other times appears lost has he throws over, under, and behind our receivers. He had five picks against TCU alone this year and is completing under 50% of his passes. His play against Tulane in the first half was so bad I could not believe it. Look, as long as our QB continues to struggle and JJ will not give someone else a chance, we will continue to be on the short end of the scoreboard most of the time unless the other team just can't score against our D. Even in CUSA.
Re: Does anyone remember at the end of last year
Do you remember that time you got mad at everyone for saying we should fire June, and told us congratulations we were headed in the direction of being Rice, and then topped off your post of frustration by saying you would not support SMU or any of its fans anymore? Yeah, people don't forget.

Re: Does anyone remember at the end of last year
I was told JJ took the job. And then.......
