Tulane coach on SMU’s June Jones opting for late field goal: "I’m glad he was wrong"

Tulane coach Curtis Johnson figured SMU would go for the touchdown on fourth down from the Green Wave’s 2-yard line last Saturday. The Mustangs held a 23-20 lead with 1:22 left.

But SMU coach June Jones chose to kick the field goal to force Tulane, which had been held to 42 yards in the second half, to drive the length of the field for a touchdown. The Green Wave did just that, going 68 yards in five plays to break a 15-game losing streak.

"I was a little bit surprised that they did, but I thought that because we held them on previous occasions," said Johnson, whose team allowed SMU only 6 points on three drives inside the 5. "… We had a couple of stops where I thought they may go for it. Then all of a sudden I said, well, if they kick the field goal, he (Jones) knows we can’t probably score a touchdown and win. We may get a field goal, but he’s thinking we can’t score a touchdown. They won’t ever score a touchdown. Good thing he was wrong."

Johnson compared the victory to a religious experience.

"For us it’s like Moses parting the Red Sea or Jesus feeding 5,000 because we did some stuff that we have never done and never heard about doing. We got some
stops on the goal line that were miraculous."

Wow.

I don't get his explanation. He says we was surprised but then he rationalizes the thinking and points out that they had stopped us repeatedly inside the 5.

You know it's bad when the opposing coach sounds genuinely surprised to have won a game.

Fixed it for you.
