No, I think he coached against Earl Campbell . RM started in the Spring of 1976 and Earl won the Heisman in 1977.

I can't quote his words exactly but have remembered the gist of a description of our school by Meyer, words to the effect that: "Given its location and being in Dallas and with the campus and all, SMU is the jewel of the conference."
