Big weekend

Postby Kiper » Sat Feb 26, 2005 5:10 pm

Today is Junior Day at SMU. Anyone know who's there? Numbers could be down, since several other schools are having their Junior Day, too.
Some will scoff at the idea that today is a big deal, but considering the fact that many of our signees in recent years saw SMU for the first time when they attended a Junior Day, I sure hope we have some good players on campus.

Rivals lists 3 offers on the table so far for SMU. All-World players QB Mathew Stafford of Highland Park and Adron Tennell of Irving. They can go anywhere they want-literally. A third offer apparently has been made to DE Cody Williams(6-4, 235) of Longview. Williams looks like a stud running a 4.5, 24 reps, squat 450, vertical 32 and shuttle 4.4 although I'm not sure if those numbers are confirmed by anyone at a camp. Great student, been to SMU camps and wants to commit in the summer to someone. Although SMU is the only team to offer yet he also mentions Ark, LSU, UT, A&M, Tech, Iowa, TCU and Wisconsin as showing the most interest. It appears he has the most interest in Arkansas at this point.

OK, you've convinced me. Stafford, Tennell and Williams all have my full support.
I bet the coaches are relieved!

Anyone find a list of the recruits at Junior day? Would be easier than scouring rivals for references.

I've been asking around. Most of the information I got was incomplete (a position with a first name, or a a name and a high school, etc.), so I've been hopping around on the internet and I THINK most of these guys were there. How interested they are in SMU, I don't know, just as I don't know how interested we are in them individually. But it makes for interesting discussion.

QB Orie Lemon (6-2, 220, 4.45) Houston (Yates)
(I think this one is right -- how many QBs can there be named "Orie"?)
OL/LB Wes Simon (6-3, 270, 5.3) Plano (Plano West)
DE Shane Shead (6-5, 220, 4.7) Plano (Plano West)
(Not sure about this one -- all I heard was "a tall DE named Shane something")
CB/WR Garfield Hicks (6-2, 170, 4.6) Waco (Midway)
LB Jake Mechler (6-2, 240, 4.75) Richardson (RHS)
(This another guess on my part -- the rumor was "a thick LB named Jake")
OL Michael Prince (6-4, 275, 5.3) Southlake (Carroll)
DB/QB Christian Ponder (6-3, 205, 4.55) Colleyville (Heritage)

Again, I don't KNOW that these guys were there. But based on the bits and pieces of information I got, these are my guesses. And I don't have the slightest idea if any of these guys can play. But this is what the rumor mill has turned up (so far).

Trying to go down you list using Rivals -

Orie Lemon - Ath/OLB - Rivals100 -
Comments that he would committ to UT if they offered.

Wes Simon - Guard - No further information at the moment

Shane Shead - TE/DE -
Lists SMU as a medium interest

James (Garfield) Hicks - CB/WR -
Lists medium interest in SMU, Baylor, OKST, A&M, TT

Jake Mechler - ILB
No further information

Michael Prince - Not listed in Rivals

Christian Ponder - QB -
Does not list SMU in his interests instead hoping for FSU and UT

Heard another guy who came to junior day was Hurst (L.D. Bell) QB Joe Mauro (6-5, 210, 4.7), and supposedly he enjoyed it .... enough so that he has added SMU to a list that also includes (according to Rivals) Arkansas, Iowa, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Purdue, TCU, Texas and Tulsa.

That's interesting - Mauro is really talented.
I think the Younger kid (Coppell DL) also was at Junior Day.

To take from another thread:
Blake Collier (LB) was also at SMU Junior Day

What Blake said on rivals:
"I also went to SMU's junior day. I enjoyed it too and got to see things there and learn a little more about the school."

Another guy who was at Junior Day was McKinney (McKinney North) OL Ryan Burke. He's not that huge (6'2"? 6'3"? 240? 250?) He also has come to a couple of spring practices. I only know about him because a friend's son goes to school with him. I have no idea how good he is.

Not much information on Ryan Burke.

Rivals doesn't have him listed yet, however, found him on Fortune Football Recruiting.

They list him at 6'2 239, OL/DT/NG
