Arkansas State is going to dominate the ponies, guaranteed

Postby docpoco » Sun Mar 13, 2005 8:55 am

Im not here to put down another football program. That said, I also grw up in Texas, and in the 80's considered myself somewhat of an SMU fan.
I was pretty surprised when I saw that someone from your site had called for your coach to be fired for scheduling us?
Am I missing something?
What about being 3-20 in your last 23 games!!
Arkansas State has had 15 wins in about as many games as SMU...

IN case you want to see what other NCAA fans think about your comments, feel free to check it out here.

Until then, see you in the fall ponies...

Appreciate your concern for our comments on this board. Couple of things you failed to mention...

First, Arkansas State has had 8 wins in the past two years or 23 games, not 15 as you would have us believe. Before you speak, I grant you that is more than us.

However, our records were both 3-8 last year, while we fielded the youngest team in Div. 1.

As to your comments on the other board deriding and ridiculing the "pony" mascot, how can someone who claims to have grown up in Texas not know the history of the mighty wild Mustang. Guess you got shipped out of Texas to Arkansas because of your learning disabilities

Right....anyone can throw out insults.

I was also referring to our wins over the last 3 years.

But, aside from fighting insult with insult , which is exactly what I did ( Im referring to the comment on your board that stated "no history, no crowd following, and no one cares".) Thats a pretty offensive statement , yeah?

I do know the history of SMU, I believe that its your "no history" guy that doesnt know anything about our history. Otherwise he would know

What Im looking for is for someone to show me how you can make a statement like that when in 2004 we had,

A better attendance average
A sold out game
Better Offensive Statistics ( like the 6 TD, 13 INT of your QB)
The same record, only we played Ole Miss, Memphis, LSU and MIZZOU
and we were excited about playing a regional team.

Do me a favor, and say something that helps your program in this argument, rather than trying to put ours, or myself down.

Alright not to continue to be questioning you docpoco but I just want you to check your facts before you pop off -

15 wins over three years is over 36 games not 23

Our QBs changed last year alot...final stats were 11 TDs/17 INTs compared to your QBs 14/17 ratio.

Of course then again we had 12 running TDs and your RBs had 8.

Oh and your stats on attendance...
Total attendance at Arkansas State home games - 61307 (4 games)
Ave - 15427
Largest Crowd - 30427 (Memphis)

SMU - Total Attendance home games - 93254 (5 Games)
Attendance after four games - 83048
Attendance after three games - 70371
Ave. - 18651
Largest Crowd - 34689 (Texas Tech)

Docpoco brings up some great points. SMU had a sellout (TTU). SMU played Texas Tech (18th), Okla. State (unranked). Fresno State (22nd), and Boise State (12th). Now that doesn't compare to ASU's schedule of LSU (16th), Ole Miss (unranked), Mizzou (unranked) and Memphis (unranked). These are AP rankings. SMU beat SJSU, Nevada, and Tulsa. ASU beat Troy U, U of La-Monroe, and Utah State. However, in 2003 both SMU and ASU lost to a common opponent, Tulsa (both lost in Tulsa).

One would be hard pressed to argue that ASU doesn't have a very fine schedule and plays strong opponents.

As to average attendance, SMU competes for fan dollars in a metropolitan market larger than the sate of Arkansas' entire population. SMU has professional football, basketball, hockey, baseball and other major university football teams (UT, TX A$M) to compete against during a football season. ASU on the other hand only has to compete with the unofficial state holiday of opening deer season weekend. Markets and completion, as well as a less than stellar football team place SMU at a disadvantage. One has to give ASU attendance the edge there.

As to total stats, one would be hard press to have a really good feel for the stats given that ASU plays such a robust schedule and SMU seems to have less than stellar schedule After all, SMU didn’t play LSU, Ole Miss, Memphis or Mizzou. So one would have to give ASU the stats category.

Well, there is no doubt that ASU is a fine program and plays fine opponents and SMU may well be humbled before the powerful Indians. We shall see in 2006. But in the spirit of smack and living in the state of Ark, I will be placing money on the Ponies and one couldn’t be very frightened of the Indians.

Again, good points.
I just thought it would be pertinent to mention that arkansas state only played 4 home games last year. The rest were ALL on the road. The last two games that pull our home attendance down were raining, freezing, and at the end of a beaten season.

And you can't qoute end of the season rankings. At the time LSU, MIZZOU, and Memphis were all ranked I believe 3rd, 17th, and 24th respectively. And Ole Miss, while they weren't awesome they did manage a win against South Carolina as well as coming within 3 of LSU and 4 of Tennessee.

And sure you had good attendance when you played Texas Tech. Considering that the majority of fans were probably from Lubbock with their average attendance of about 50,000. Aside from that you have 17841,13117,12677 and 10206.

I guess the real issue now is that we have 2 D1 programs, both trying to get something going, and both heading in the right direction. After all, anything beats an 0-12 season.

So if someone would kindly apologize for the "no history, no crowd following, and no one cares comment", WHICH IS NO MORE TRUE FOR OUR SCHOOL THAN IT IS FOR YOURS, I can be on my way. Otherwise we'll have to settle this like men.... on my gamecube.

But it is more true for your school than ours. All three apply to you, while only two apply for us. We have history. And a better band.

NCAA '05 Simulation results: (at ASU)
SMU 38 ASU 21
SMU 31 ASU 7
SMU 28 ASU 21
SMU 14 ASU 24
SMU 41 ASU 35

I think it is clear......

cheer up Ponyboy......don't take life so seriously. You should read my new book..."Snacky, Broke, and Down: Can I Still Get Laid?" The answer is no, but it is a good read anyhow.
