Let this be a lesson (Lattimore)

Just saw Marcus Lattimore of South Carolina probably end his promising career with a horrific knee injury. The kind that makes your stomach turn. You never know but it looked horrible. Queasy like the Jerad Williams injury.

All that we ask of these kids, all that they dream to be, and all of the criticism that rains down upon them on a daily and weekly basis - to see all of that go up in smoke is just sickening. I know we are much more critical of coaches on this board than players, and that is fine. Let's just think about the players when we're quick to criticize so we can have some water cooler pride on Monday. As an ex player, this is why I cringe when these kids with their whole life ahead of them line up and do permanent and lasting damage to each other.

If anything, a message to these kids to take advantage of their athletic ability to get a great education at a great school as it can all can end very quickly. I'm not a religious guy at all, but I'm thinking of Marcus Lattimore and can't imagine what he and his family are going through.

Another lesson is if you are a junior or redshirt sophomore and are eligible for the draft and are highly probable first day pick they need to really consider going pro. They can come back and get the degree later because most college graduates don't make $500,000 per year coming out of college. I think this was Lattimore's junior year.

To paraphrase Dale Hansen, if someone is willing to pay you big bucks to do something legal, you need to turn pro ASAP.

or, if you are offered obscene amounts of money while you are in college to play a professional sport and you choose not to, you NEED more education.

Well said. Even this board has seen more than a fair share of name calling of players who started but weren't up to par because of injury. I hate to see immature adults anonymously posting on boards to take out their frustrations on kids who risk this type of injury every time they put on pads.

Just saw the video...I feel horrible about this situation. He's one hard working young man, and humble as well. Really praying that he finds a way to recover and get another shot at a career. Reminds me a lot of the Willis Magahee (spelling?) injury, however he recovered and was able to play again, so hopefully Marcus can too.

Let's not forget our own Joey Fontana who had a horrendous knee injury and against all odds made a great recovery. Worked his butt off to do it and even though he won't be playing football again, his future looks bright.

Very well said. Can happen at anytime to anyone. Count your blessings. Get to a good school where you can get a good education first and jump to pro asap and get as much $$$ as you can UP FRONT.

Crazy that this is his second major knee injury . . . the "good news" is that he's done the rehab before so he knows what he faces . . . I hope he plays again . . .

gruesome looking hit. Glad that the young man says he will be back playing. I still remember seeing the hit Theisman took- it was really ugly.
