Backups

Post by Pony94 »

I preface this post with the admission that I am not a college football coach, so I probably dont know as much as our current coach.

However, when we are down 35-10 late in the 4th quarter, why are our first stringers still in the game? I tuned out the game, but with 2:00 to go, Gilbert and Line were still in. It has been said before, by why on earth would you not play your backups to get them experience?

Secondly, if the team's stated goal is the Hawaii Bowl, why would you risk injury to your best players in a game that was over.

I equat this crap to the stupid swinging gate...just dumb coaching. I am done...when does basketball season start?

Very little makes sense when trying to figure out why JJ does what only he does on offense. If he is still trying to groom this offense 9 games into the season only he can understand why-especially since it is floundering for the most part and pretty much has for most of his 5 years here. And I mean his passing offense.

I would have liked to watch the backups too.
I thought he "surrendered" early in the game when he accepted the FG instead of taking a new set of downs. ZL probably would'VE scored a TD running the ball on the new set of downs.

I suspect the fact that the offensive line was getting whipped meant the coaches neither wanted to make Preston have to come in and run for his life, nor felt like seeing backup offensive linemen whipped even worse (?). I do agree a backup RB could/should have been in there.

And some of our young receivers. Dieter and Joseph.

The "coach" has no clue how to use backups. Rather than try to build people up next year, he rather just prepare them flag football practice in the spring and then have the expectation of 7-5

Line is a senior. He probably did not want to come out.

That where coaching comes in. Just because a player does not want to come out does not mean he shouldn't.

I am sure i am behind on this discussion. Is roughing the kicker an auto 1st down? I didnt have sound on the tv i was at. If so, WTH?

Isn't there a difference between running into the kicker and roughing the kicker? I think the roughing call does carry an auto 1st down. Anybody able to confirm?

roughing is a personal foul. automatic 1st down and 15 yards.

running into the kicker is a 5 yard penalty.

it wasn't an automatic first down. it would have been 4&1 or 4&2. the way we play, there is no "automatic" first down from that yardage.

JJ did not pass up 1st and goal to take the 3 points.

Thanks for clarifying - back to backups, June hardly ever does until 2-3 min left of a blowout.

Running into is 5 yards and only a first down if 5 or less were needed. Roughing is 15 yards and automatic first down. UCF kid hit the kicker's leg while extended and I thought that carried an automatic roughing call but apparently I was wrong.

BTW, wasn't that head ref the same little short dude June has had run ins with before. I would have thought we would have asked him to never officiate our games again.***

***None of this post is meant to indicate officiating made a difference. I may be in Arkansas but I do not blame losses on officiating as they do in Arkansas. We were soundly defeated.
