Toto? Are you kidding me?
![]()
Huh?!?!? ![]() ![]()
MGG: I would encourage you to read the Steely Dan 'extended timeline' on their official website www.steelydan.com to see the numerous musicians from the JAZZ world who have contributed to the band's success over the years.
While Toto may have had its success in 1982, it pales in comparison to the 25 years of success by the greatest jazz/rock band of all time, IMO. I'm sure your friends at the One O'Clock Lab Band would agree. In fact, Phil Woods (saxophonist) - who guest lectured at UNT on Feb. 21 - played on Steely Dan's album "Katy Lied". Let's see: Steely Dan in the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame. Toto - not! ![]() Below is a short musical history of Steely Dan. Album: "Can't Buy a Thrill" released in 1972 contains "Do It Again" which reaches #6 on the charts & "Reelin' in the Years" which hits #11. The album itself peaks at #17 and goes gold. Album: "Pretzel Logic" released in 1974 contains "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" which reaches #3. The album itself goes gold and hits #8 on the charts. Album: "Countdown to Ecstasy" released in 1973. Despite the lack of a hit single, "Countdown" receives excellent reviews and spawns such radio favorites as "Bodhisattva" and "My Old School". Album: "Katy Lied" released in 1975. Goes gold and peaks at #13. Album: "The Royal Scam" released in 1976. Goes gold and hits #25. Album: "Aja" released in 1977. Goes platinum and hits #3. The album contains "Peg" (hits #11), "Deacon Blues" (hits #19) and "Josie" (hits #26) on the singles charts. "Aja" wins a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Non-Classical Recording. The following year front men Donald Fagen and Walter Becker release the title track to the movie "FM" which reaches #22 on the singles charts. Album: "Greatest Hits" is released in 1978 and goes platinum reaching #30 on the charts. Album: "Gaucho" is released in 1980, goes platinum and hits #9 on the charts. The singles from the album, "Hey Nineteen" and "Time Out of Mind" hit #10 and #22, respectively. Album: "Two Against Nature" is released in 2000. First album by the band in 20 years and it hits #6 on the charts, wins 4 Grammys including the top honor - Album of the Year - at the 2001 Grammy Awards show. 2001: Steely Dan is inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame. Album: "Everything Must Go" is released in 2003.

Unnecessary Roughness, which featured Sinbad. Toto v. Steely Dan I take back what I said in another thread. THIS is the stupidest thread ever. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Steely Dan ended up in this thread because MGG said that Toto is "jazz/rock fused together the way it was meant to be" and I disagreed. Checking the 'official' Steely Dan website, I do not see any mention of either Donald Fagen or Walter Becker attending William & Mary. It does say that both men were students at Bard College in Annandale-on Hudson, New York in 1967. http://www.steelydan.com/faq.html

Let's see: Steely Dan in the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame. Toto - not! ![]() ....................................................................... One O'Clock Who? Oh, that worthless group of jazz freaks who spend way too much time on Fry Street?!?!? They were first nominated for a Grammy during my Junior year at NT and didn't even have the right stuff to beat Count Basie or Duke Ellington (who were in their nominated category in 1975). Only just kiddin' about the worthless part, of course. ![]() Back to Toto: They were studio musicians who basically came together as a recording group just for the hell of it. They rarely toured in their entire history because that was not what they were all about. They did have several good albums even after their big Grammy winner of 1982, ie, Toto IV. "The 7'th One" is a favorite of mine and continues to show what great musicians they were. I have nothing against Steely Dan whatsoever other than its Mike Rhyner of "The Tickets" favorite group. ![]() As I said 2 posts ago, sort of a slow time of year for college smack boards, eh? ![]()
If you're going to throw studio bands into the mix now, you have to include the Funk Brothers who played for anyone who was anyone in the hey day of Motown.

Only if you spell her name correctly. It's Tennille and she was one hot babe in her day! And remember: Steely Dan was named after a dildo. Can you name another group that had the b*lls to do that?
How do you know this stuff?!
