Moriera leads the way as Texans knock off Ranger 97-80 in season opener

ODESSA – Yanick Moreira scored a career high 32 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to help the defending NJCAA champion Texans to a 97-80 victory over Ranger College in their season opener Friday afternoon at the OC Sports Complex on the campus of Odessa College.
Moreira – MVP of last season's NJCAA national tournament – helped the Texans overcome a lackluster first half, pouring in 18 points.

South Plains found themselves in a hole early and were down by as many as nine points with seven minutes remaining in the first half.
As the clock ticked down to the final few minutes, the Texans finally found a rhythm.
Down 40-32, Malik Nichols helped the Texans capitalize off of two Ranger turnovers, first finishing his own steal and then making a bucket and drawing a foul following a steal by Kendahl Amerson. Nichols completed the three-point play to cut the deficit to three.
Soon after, the Texans went on a 9-0 run that saw them take their first lead of the game and eventually head to the locker room with a three point lead, 50-47.
South Plains did not lose any of the momentum they had gained when the teams returned from the locker rooms, blasting out to a 14 point lead in less than four minutes with a 13-2 run to start the half.
The Texans led by as many as 18 and no less than 13 on their way to a decisive victory.
Moreira made 14-of-24 shots from the field on the way to his career night and received significant help from his teammates as four others scored in double figures.
Freshman Ryan Martin had an impressive debut with the Texans, making 7-of-11 shots and finishing with 18 points while also pulling down 12 rebounds.
Devonte Smith - South Plains' floor general – tied his career high from a year ago with 16 points. Smith was 4-of-7 from the field and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe while also dishing out eight assists and snagging five steals.
Amerson and Nichols each chipped in with 13 points.
The Texans return to the court Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they square off with Monterrey Tech, again in Odessa. Live video of the contest will be streamed live at http://www.spctexans.com.

LEVELLAND - Kendahl Amerson scored a game high 22 points to lead four Texan players in double figures as the No. 1 ranked South Plains College Texans clobbered Western Nebraska College 102-49 in front of a rowdy crowd in the Texans home opener at the Texan Dome.

South Plains kept the Cougars off balance the entire game, holding Western Nebraska to less than half of the 101 points they had averaged through their first two games of the season.
Sophomore Yanick Moreira made a case as the top player in the NJCAA, scoring 19 points on 9-of-16 shooting, grabbing eight rebounds, and blocking three shots in only 20-minutes of playing time.

Amerson - a 6-foot-3 guard from Detroit, Mich., - made 6-of-10 shots from beyond the three-point arc and 8-of-13 overall to lead all scorers and also had eight rebounds.

Freshmen Michael Karena and Roderick Lawrence scored 12 and 11 points each, respectively.

As a team, South Plains made 36-of-73 (.493) shots and 12-of-26 (.462) from downtown and outrebounded their opponents 52-35.

The Texans will return to the court when they host the Texan Classic Nov. 9-10 at the Texan Dome. South Plains will go for their 40th consecutive win dating back to last season when they host Northeastern Colorado at 5 p.m on Friday before taking on North Lake College Saturday at 3 p.m.

LEVELLAND – Sophomore Yanick Moreira recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while playing just more than 21 minutes to help the South Plains College Texans to their 40th consecutive win, defeating Northeastern Colorado 95-49 Friday evening at the Texan Dome.

The Texans have not lost since March 4, 2011.
Moreira was 6-of-12 from the field and five of his rebounds were on the offensive end. He also swatted away three shots.

By halftime, Moreira had scored 13 points and collected nine rebounds to help SPC to a 23-point lead at intermission. He played only four-minutes in the second half.

Freshman Kendahl Amerson had another standout game, making 4-of-6 shots from beyond the 3-point line to finish with 12 points. Malik Nichols and Forrest Robinson chipped in with 11 apiece.

Sophomore floor general Devonte Smith dished out a career high 12 assists.

Since the Texans struggled somewhat against Ranger College in their first game of the season – a game they ultimately won by 17-points – South Plains has won their last three games by an average of 53 points per contest.

On Saturday, the Texans will look to continue their winning ways against North Lake College at 3 p.m. Live video and stats of the Texans' game versus the Blazers will be available at www.spctexans.com.

LEVELLAND – The South Plains College Texans continued their dominance over opponents with another big win Saturday afternoon in the Texan Dome, destroying North Lake College 94-51.

South Plains (5-0) entered the game having won their last three by an average of 53 points.
It wasn't an entirely pretty game, though, as a slight lapse allowed North Lake to cut into the Texans 20-8 deficit early in the first half. The Blazers pulled to within five points on three occasions before South Plains ended the half with a 12-2 run, taking a 15 point lead into the locker room.

The team that came out in the second half looked more like the Texans have all season long as South Plains scored the first 17 points of the half to remove any drama of a possible comeback by the Blazers.

Sophomore Yanick Moreira once again led the Texans in scoring with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Devonte Smith had 15 points and seven assists, while only turning the ball over twice. Kendahl Amerson and Brandon Neel each contributed with 13 and 11 points, respectively, and Ryan Martin collected a season high 13 rebounds.

South Plains will now turn their attention to Tuesday's opponent, Temple College. The Leopards are 4-0 on the season and have most recently defeated Tomball College, 139-86, and the East Texas Flyers, 136-70.

Texan head coach Steve Green has a slight edge over Temple since arriving at South Plains with a 9-8 record. The last time the Texans traveled to Temple, the Leopards handed South Plains a 73-70 loss, though South Plains avenged the defeat 86-60 just 11 days later.

Tipoff for the Texans game versus Temple is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Here's video from Moreira's game Friday night. Also, Moreira & his teammates will be in Plano next week on 11-23 & 11-24 @ 4:00 for the Collin County Thanksgiving Classic. It would be great to see a large # of SMU fans there to support him.

The first video clip of Moreira is @ the 40 second clip.
