Not great, but a nice win
Number of 20 point wins this year: 4
Number of 20 point wins from 2002 - 2007: 4 (SJST, Rice, Sam Houston, Ark St)
I know we all want to be crushing CUSA all the time right now, but don't forget where we came from... a 28 point win beats the spread.
For those who weren't at the game, the wind was crazy blowing south to north, so in the 1st and 3rd quarters we mostly had to run the ball; that is why we were more effective on offense in the 2nd and 4th quarters.
The D was great all night. Southern Miss didn't have a chance from the outset.
The zone read has been an effective play for us the last couple of weeks. Who would have thunk it from June? I wonder if it was a Phillips suggestion, a Chang suggestion, or did GG suggest it from his offense at UT?
It was nice to see Fuller involved. He made some great catches over the fall, but really struggled running routes on the inside of the field. We lined him up a lot on the outside tonight. Having a reliable, effective receiver on the outside made a huge difference in the consistency of the offense. June has wanted Ace, Holman, or Dieter to make a play because they have more of an ability to stretch the field, but that isn't happening, so he went to Fuller. Nice adjustment, but of course we all wish it had happened earlier in the year. WR screens were much more effective this game, and I think Fuller gets a lot of the credit for that.
That bull rush sack by Margus was awesome.
Still frustrating that DJ is dropping the ball.
Still frustrating that the oline made us go from TD to field goal and TD to blocked field goal with mistakes. False Start penalties are usually because you are at an athletic disadvantage and trying to get an early start. Everyone said Flozell couldn't hear in one ear... it sure was interesting that he got deaf everytime the cowboys played against the better ends in the league. We have a center playing guard and a guard playing tackle, so I think those things are just going to happen, because they are not at the best position for them to be able to compete at.
Worst play call of the night: Either the 3rd and 2 corner route in the end zone or the 3rd and 2 pass call at the end of the first quarter (running the ball then would have killed the rest of the quarter and let us punt with the wind. Kind of a loser mentality, but technically would have been a better call).
Rice isn't as bad as I thought. Won 3 of 4, and only loss was close at Tulsa. The two games they didn't score a lot of points, they couldn't get their running game going. They will run out of the spread; if you stop the run, they aren't consistent enough in the passing game alone to score a lot. They have an extra week to prepare for us, which doesn't help either.
Then again, if we don't beat Rice, we don't deserve to go to a bowl...

Re: Not great, but a nice win
bottom line is this was our 1st ever win against USM. Tough year for those guys.
On to Houston where there is another group of birds waiting for the Mustangs

Well we are at a point where we beat bad teams pretty good now for the next step.Beat average to above average teams on a consistent basis.

Re: Not great, but a nice win
I thought it was a very solid, domination type win. The exact thing we have longed to see for years. Nothing close about it. No letting a lesser team hang in there. This was a killer instinct win. And it has been a long time since we have seen that type of killer instinct win at SMU.
Re: Not great, but a nice win
June has used the zone read many times in the past at hawaii, depends on the QB

I don't think we are there yet. After all, we lost to Tulane this season.
Re: Not great, but a nice win
Again it was an expected win...not a barnburner. Beat Rice and THEN beat Tulsa...then you have something.

The team has to beat Rice, or else we are no further along than in 2006.

Re: Not great, but a nice win
Nice win for the Mustangs! The team dominated from opening kickoff. It was not a close game and all business.
Re: Not great, but a nice win
Settled for too many Field goals and NO innovation still in the red zone...same old draws and screens. Jones will have to have much better coaching decisions to win at Houston and at home coming up. It was a win, nothing more. The second half was flat out boring guys.....you put 0-8 teams like this away on the offensive side and run it down their [deleted].
Re: Not great, but a nice win
I know it's wishful thinking, but I read in the Austin paper with interest how Mack Brown changed up his offense in the ISU game to better suit his talent. Hello, June we do what we do, are you listening? Actually. seeing GG run for two TDs for the third game does qualify somewhat. We need to play our best game next week, Beat Rice - Hello Hawaii. Then if UCF can beat Tulsa, well...one game at a time.
Re: Not great, but a nice win
It was a fun night (after a wretched afternoon) with the Mustangs! The small crowd was reserved to say the least. However, the drunks at the end of the game that were shouting obscenities toward June need to chill out. (Sorry for the rant, but there were two 4 year olds right by us that did not need to hear that mess.)
Re: Not great, but a nice win
Like I have said before that we do a good job of beating teams with losing records.
Rice, you are up next.

Rice, you are up next.

shouting obscenities at the coach during a game with the team, the team members parents, and little kids observing is about as low as it gets. Lets not turn into those low end UT and TT fans that lose all sense of perspective. Its still just football - no need to embarrass yourself and your school publicly.
