Questions About Last NightI attended the game, which was my first in several decades.
I thought I heard in the introductions, that we started an all Texas team? Was that right? The introductions were terrible in quality and substance. They were done better in the sixties! Spot lights, long introduction of the team, the starters and the head coach coming to mid-court. Second, where do the students sit now? The bleachers were tucked against the wall and we had only three rows pulled out for students that ended mid-court. I saw some midway up the south goal. Are we restricted from pulling the wooden bleachers out and having the students sit all across the court? Including behind the visitor's bench?
Re: Questions About Last Night
The student section (at least some of it) is still behind the home and visitor's bench in the pull out bleachers. If you look at the Dallas Morning News Picture gallery, you can see the students pretty much filled it up. Having said that, I heard that "someone" made a measuring mistake the last time SMU replaced the floor. As a result of that mistake, it is my understanding that they can no longer fully extend the bleachers. Not sure if it is true, but they haven't extended the bleachers in years. Do unto others before they do unto you!!
Re: Questions About Last NightThe video quality was atrocious due to apparent memory problems. No excuse for that as it should have been tested and retested prior to gametime. Was wondering about the bleacher thing too. Rule that you have to be a certain distance from the teams?
Re: Questions About Last Nightever since bobby knight got his panties in a wad over our students harrassing him, we have not allowed our students behind the visitors bench - therefore we dont get as many students since they dont have much good seating.
They claim it is a CUSA rule (Banowsky was at the TT game and didnt like what he saw apparently) - but i call b.s. on that. I think we are just being wusses as usual. We should have told Knight he got what he should expect and if he doesnt like he can send a surrogate coach. I hate how we cave on school spirit stuff left and right. anyway - you hit a sore spot so thought i would give you my two cents. Hopefully when we re-do we will increase the number and qaulity of student seating. Watching them react to the game is 100% the fun of college basketball. and yes - we should put them behind the visitors - believe me they will be behind Brown making fun of his age all year in ever gym we visit this year.
Re: Questions About Last NightAnd yes All Texas starting 5.
Re: Questions About Last NightThanks!
On the "all Texas" starters, we could have gotten a little more positive press on that. On the bleachers, all the excuses don't cut water--TTU was not part of CSUA, so why should the conference care? Bobby Knight is gone and what sway should he have over our student seating? Bobby Knight was a discrace in his own conduct, far outpacing our students for one game! We need to get roudy and loud and the students need to have fun! It will carry forward to football (a rising tide raises all boats). I didn't see any students on the bleachers behind the visitors bench, seemed like the press or the visiting team's assistants were at work there. What do they do at Duke? We should copy, word for word, yell for yell, seating for seating!
Re: Questions About Last Night
Visiting teams in Cameron Indoor get about four rows of their own people, then one row of "buffer" people who are not allowed to cheer for anything (my RA was a buffer person one year), and then it's just students. If you look for the Duke blue in the following picture, you can see how close Duke students are to Roy Williams: http://www.zimbio.com/pictures/BhG22X2oF5u/North+Carolina+v+Duke/G0lKprLpNS1/Roy+Williams Florida State did not complain about this, either (it's behind press row and not the benches, but still): http://www.google.com/imgres?q=roy+williams+cameron+indoor&um=1&hl=en&safe=active&sa=N&tbo=d&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&biw=1034&bih=581&tbm=isch&tbnid=EPiLsnN94ywKGM:&imgrefurl=http://www.todaysaccheadlines.com/2012/01/pictures-of-day_22.html&docid=e_EErFNhg8au-M&imgurl=http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d9mvzCo0nRU/TxwjLj3-wxI/AAAAAAAAwWM/fOrg-uaeN6Q/s1600/CRAZIES.jpg&w=660&h=454&ei=OW-hUIKuKqiY0QH_6IDoDg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=127&vpy=237&dur=249&hovh=186&hovw=271&tx=182&ty=112&sig=108897159910535071391&page=4&tbnh=117&tbnw=154&start=74&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:19,s:74,i:375
Re: Questions About Last Night
SMU students got loud and rowdy enough to bother an opposing coach? I'm pleasantly surprised. "We hung with them until the game got out of hand." -DanFreibergerForHeisman
Re: Questions About Last NightHe was beyond bothered. He was in full bore Bobby Knight melt down mode. It was one of the few times i felt our students really effected the game. He was thoroughly disgusted by our students, and they were in full bore brat mode and not caring what he thought. Pretty humorous.
Re: Questions About Last NightAt any college game now no student section sits behind the coach. This must be an NCAA rule.
"We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

Re: Questions About Last NightI am sure the new arena will provide plenty of student seating. They can sit by the band and they have temporary bleachers typically for the bigger games (i.e. Memphis behind the basket opposite the band). - that was actually a decent student turnout comparable but they need to get more rowdy.
Yes, it was a major botch job putting the new flooring in. The bleachers used to come out prior to the new floor. Total idiot alert not to mention spending $1M on a very crappy scoreboard. Whomever approved both of those things need their head examined.
Re: Questions About Last Night
I don't know if it was a mistake or if it was intentional, but essentially, here's the issue: The old pull-out bleachers were built for the the floor to be on the original floor level. When the new floor was brought in (a few years ago), instead of replacing the old floor, it was literally built ON TOP of the old floor. They remove the new floor every year during volleyball season (which is still played on the old floor). Because the new floor's level is literally 4-6 inches above the old floor (which still exists below it), and the blue seats and pull-out bleachers rest on the old floor, the choice was either to do away with the blue seats (and replace them with a smaller section of seats) or not pull the pull-out bleachers out as much. SMU made the decision to protect as much money as possible.
Re: Questions About Last NightThanks for the information. I wonder if they could just pull a few sections of the floor out from the wall and let the bleachers come out on the original floor.
Buffer Zone, I guess it makes sense. It does allow students behind the visitors bench, just a few rows back. My thinking is pretty simple, make the game fun for the students and they will come, eventually even for football.
Re: Questions About Last Night
Very true statement. However, I think that part of the problem is just the aweful attendance. Lowering the lights, pumping up the music and shining spotlights seems pretty silly when 300 people are in the stands and if I was a coach or a player I would not want a flashy introduction with that poor of a crowd. When Brown gets this thing rolling and we get in the Big East and have much better attendance, I imagine the starting lineup presentation will be much more dynamic. Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!
