Top 30 Class + Transfers

Postby Digetydog » Wed Nov 14, 2012 1:56 pm

Let me get this straight:
1) Larry Brown has a Top 30 class of three guys coming to the Hilltop next year;
2) Larry Brown has three good transfers sitting on the bench (ineligible) for the rest of the season; and
3) Larry Brown is working on adding more good players for 2014.

Could Larry Brown please give JJ recruiting lessons?

More like, explain to JJ the need for hiring young aggressive local and national recruiters.

Basketball is completely different. 1 or 2 star players can change a program. Football is a lot more challenging.

Believe me, if June Jones landed the best JuCo QB in the country and a pair of stud WR it would completely change SMU's football program so I am not buying it. Additionally it is not 1 coach that is recruiting 20-25 players. All you need is for all your coaches to do their small part.

If that is the case then Doh or any other coach should have done this in their 1st year. The point is that LB hired young assertive black coaches that can flat out get it on the recruiting trail and JJ did not. He has had 5 years and about a third of his staff is almost eligible for retirement benefits.

LB gets recruits that doh could never get because he is LB.

June can't get recruits that he should get because his staff is lazy and refuses to get out there and do the work.

Agreed but LB still was out on the trail busting his tail meeting with coaches and recruits face to face.

Yes I agree. June needs to move his [deleted].

Doh worked hard but never had these results, although he did recruit moderately well.

It isn't that June didn't go get the best recruiters he could find like LB or land incredibly high level guys like LB, it is that he didn't put ANY recruiters on his staff, and isn't bringing in ANY high level guys.

We are recruiting against FCS programs guys. Get that through your head and process it.

You can't compare staffs. The hoops staff was the result of a who's who think tank, that pretty much didnt even include SMU brass. Fball was just an eclectic island guy hiring his buddies. The Magnum PI of chuck and duck. The hoops staff is also paid exorbitantly, industry shattering money.

SMU lucked into something so much bigger than that obscene search Orsini ran. They ran into a HOF legend, one of the 5 best living American coaches, whose HOF coaching tree lobbied for him, who then hand selects a staff of really regarded young assistants. This is once in a lifetime, planets aligning stuff. Its bizarro world, fun too

That's nothing but an excuse.

Larry Brown, in less than 6 months, had SMU fighting for the Harrison twins against Kentucky. Granted, we didn't get them or probably have a shot. But that would be like SMU going against Alabama less than 6 months of June's arrival here and actually getting recognized interest from it.

Instead, June is doing nothing but waiting for players to come to him as he has stated before.

I was not trying to compare staffs but instead comparing their approach to recruiting. LB & Co. are aggressive in there recruiting efforts, JJ & Co. wait until someone shows interest in SMU. By the way, your "Magnum PI of the chuck and duck" comment still has me laughing.

It is not about retirement benefits, it is about getting off their duffs, covering their territory, establishing coaching contacts, following up on offers and establishing a relationship with recruits. Also, make themselves available for contacts with recruits when guidelines allow.
