Houston Chronicle: NO SMU COVERAGE

Postby MrMustang1965 » Wed Aug 14, 2002 7:24 pm

Hmmm...does anyone see a problem with this picture? The Houston Chronicle, the only DAILY NEWSPAPER in the LARGEST CITY in TEXAS, will NOT have any coverage of either SMU or TCU in its 'College Series' in the Sports Section that began on August 11.

The football teams that WILL be covered are:

Aug. 11 - Houston
Aug. 12 - Texas Southern University
Aug. 13 - Prairie View A&M
Aug. 14 - Southwest Texas State University
Aug. 15 - Stephen F. Austin State University
Aug. 16 - Sam Houston State University
Aug. 17 - Rice University
Aug. 18 - Texas A&M University
Aug. 19 - Baylor University
Aug. 20 - Texas Tech University
Aug. 21 - University of Texas
Aug. 22 - University of Oklahoma
Oklahoma State University
Aug. 23 - Big 12 North

Once again, SMU is being 'shut out' by the media. The 'powers that be' at the Houston Chronicle said, "There's not enough interest in Houston to warrant reporting on SMU (or TCU) in the 'College Series.' Wonder if the 'powers that be' took a look at the SMU Media Guide to see how many players are from the Greater Houston area this year?

Thank you for the e mail address. I called the Chronicle and complained that there would not be coverage of SMU - but I will send an e mail as well. Can't believe they cover Oklahoma and Oklahoma State and not SMU - a Texas school.

Here is a copy of my email to the Chronicle about their exclusion of SMU from the College Football Tour 2002 series:

I am extremely disappointed in the Houston Chronicle's editorial decision to exclude Southern Methodist University (SMU) from its College Football Tour 2002 that began in the Sports section on August 11. (I was informed by sports writer Richard Dean in a telephone call on Wednesday, August 14 that it was an editorial decision based upon similar editorial decisions of the past few years.)

There are 22 players from the greater Houston area on this year's SMU football team. There are more players from the Houston area on this year's SMU team than from any other city in Texas. I'm sure that these players' parents, relatives and friends would have enjoyed reading about them and their team in advance of the 2002 season.

I fail to see the logic in reporting on Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in this series...two schools that are not even within the borders of Texas.

I will be watching closely to see how the Chronicle covers SMU's football team once the season begins on August 31 in Dallas against Navy.

If you are going to send a letter or email to the Chronicle to voice your dissatisfaction, too, you *MUST* include the following:

Your name
Your address
Your phone number

This is for verification purposes.

Besides the previously mentioned emails for d.cunningham and richard dean (see thread), you can also send a 'Letter to the Editor' to:

Viewpoints
c/o Houston Chronicle
P.O. Box 4260
Houston, TX 77210

Or you can fax a letter to (713) 220-3575. Or you can email it to [email protected].

Letters are subject to editing.

Come on, Mustangs! Let the only daily newspaper in the largest city in the state - with a lot of alumni with deep pockets living here! - know how you feel about this poor editorial decision! Flood 'em with emails, faxes and snail mail!

GO MUSTANGS!

Well, just as a counterpoint, I have not seen and do not plan to see much coverage of UH or Rice or UTEP in the Dallas Morning News.

And if wanted to read about my other favorite Texas college football team, I absolutely would have to read the San Antonio Express News online, because nobody -including even this year's Texas Football magazine - reports on Trinity University, who has easily been the state's most successful program the past 10 years.

Jettison: Thanks for your reply. This is a 'series' that the Chron is running on football teams around the state in advance of the 2002 season. The Chron editors report that 'there will be some coverage' of SMU once the season starts (game summaries). But doesn't it make sense to report on a team where there are 22 players from the area this newspaper caters to? I doubt there are that many players from the greater Dallas area on Rice, UH or UTEP's teams COMBINED! No, I doubt you'll see much coverage of UH, Rice or UTEP in the DMN except for 'game summaries' but I would certainly hope that the DMN would include those schools in a 'series' profiling teams in advance of the new season. As for Trinity...and Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine...that's a sad testament to how biased that once great magazine has become. The 2002 issue will most likely be the last one I ever buy.
