Those Baylor women

Postby Sam I Am » Sat Mar 26, 2005 11:13 pm

Even though a school is down in FB, they can be very good in other sports. Baylor ought to give hope to even SMU that some programs can succeed even if the cash leader doesn't.

We've got a lot of programs at SMU that give me that hope. I'll take the SMU soccer teams, swim teams, etc., any day. Hopefully football and basketball will catch up soon.

Women swimmer yes, men no

Postby Sam I Am » Sun Mar 27, 2005 4:40 pm

I noticed that the SMU men's swim team barely placed at the NCAA meet. The women fared pretty well this year. What happened?

Baylor wins again

Postby Sam I Am » Mon Mar 28, 2005 11:32 pm

Baylor Women beat UNC and advance to the final four. Why does this matter? Because BB is not a BCS sport, much less in the women's division. Consequently, SMU is competing with equal opportunity, yet we folded in the first round of the NIT. What's with that?

Well let's see...most of our starters are underclassmen...like freshmen and sophomore underclassmen...our leading scorer (also a freshman) is playing the NIT game with eight stitches in her foot...I, don't know...guess they just didn't care...Like hell they didn't care!!! Sh*t happens. Rhonda's going to have a great team next year and the year after that...just watch.

Umm, no. Bad logic.

They get BCS money. Which means their recruiting budgets are larger. Their travel budgets are better (more non-stop flights). Their office is better staffed with equipment. Our basketball teams, along with volleyball, are pooling their money for a video editing system. All will share - WHEN they get the money.

They are in a BCS conference. Which means they have the opportunity to be on TV. FSSW has regular season big 12 women's games on TV.

Kids want to be on TV. See point above.

Kids don't want to travel to Boise, Fresno, San Jose, etc. CUSA has already proved to be a huge advantage for us in recruiting over the WAC. Rhonda has mentioned over and over how big this will be for us.

One and out in the WNIT. Yeah, that sucks. But did you notice that SMS is now in the WNIT final four? They'll be playing this week up in MSG. We didn't lose to an also-ran team - they're quite good.

I could go on, but I have to get back to work.

SMS isn't Big 12, but they win

Postby Sam I Am » Tue Mar 29, 2005 12:30 pm

We can alibi for the women's program like we do our other sports, but the SMS referenced merely proves the point that non-BCS schools can do very well in men's or women's basketball IF their school is committed to it. Don't buy into the notion that the Big 12 is the reason Baylor wins and we don't. The Bears, like TCU, are hiring top quality coaches to be more competitive in all sports, including football., and they are putting money into their program. I actually think that Rampola is a good coach. Maybe she just needs more resources to get the job done.

That is my point EXACTLY.

While I don't have facts, I would guess that the Baylor WBB budget is higher than ours because they are big 12 and big 12 schools receive BCS money. Even though SMS doesn't get BCS money, perhaps they make up the difference because they draw 6,000 a game - that's big revenue.

Not sure how much BCS TV money Baylor plows into its women's b-ball, but they did average 6800+ in attendance this year, slightly outdrawing UT and they had the highest attendance of any private school in the country. That definitely brings in some revenue...

Boy does coaching ever make a difference, and she's such a babe too.

Congratulations to the Baylor Women's Basketball team on their NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP! Now THAT's how a championship team proves itself in the final game. None of this last second, one-point victory stuff for the women from Waco. They beat MSU soundly! Again, congrats!

Basketball is a sport you can if you can recruit a solid team make some noise very quickly. Given our young team and Rhonda's abilities, we should be very good in the next couple of years. Boy, that point guard for Baylor was a great passer. I hope B Hop and our post players were watching that performance last night. Its nice to be able to drive the lane and throw one up, but to drive the lane and make the dish offs for the lay-up is money.

I'll care about women's basketball when Rhonda Rompola is coaching and when Janielle Dodds is kicking tail in the low post. Until then, I don't care if last night's game was won by Baylor or DeVry. Maybe that's a sexist view, but without SMU, I just don't care.

If Baylor can, why can't SMU?

Postby Sam I Am » Wed Apr 06, 2005 6:15 pm

This thread began because Baylor overcame a scandal and spent good money to get the right coach for their team. SMU could do the same. I must say that it has been nice to be on the Baylor bandwagon before they kicked A**. But Ponies first, and always!

I've learned from reading this board that it takes juco's and partial qualifiers to win, not coaching. Baylor must have alot of both.
