HuntnFish,
You and I agree on almost everything. Bravo! you are correct! The Bench is the most overrated lift of all time! Show me a big Clean, Snatch (the lift you pervs) and a Big squat, and then we are talking!
Still sounds dirty. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
After readings several articles on our strength and conditioning program I wonder if there might be an opportunity to establish a similar program for alumns? Say a program designed around modest strength and cardio vascular training for those of us that are well beyond anything but a round of golf.
We could taylor the program around i.) raising money for the Mustang Club ii.) generating interest in the athletic program (legally) iii. and improving the relationship amongst alumns. Can you imagine a bunch of over-the-hill jocks working out together on campus every morning while the students are in class? I certainly don't pretend to know the rules concerning such a plan, but in the least perhaps we could help ourselves healthwise, help increase interest in the program and maybe even put some money into the program, even if it only helps offset the strength coach's income, thereby keeping him on the Hilltop.
Not to offensive linemen, who have to be able to get good "punch" as part of their blocking technique. Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
you will get alot more "punch" out of someone with a strong power clean than you ever will with someone a strong bench; and think about the bench press, when are you ever on your back pushing up in game, when you just got whipped!
there are way too many high schoolers out there concerned with the bench press and curls- save that for the girls- if you want to play ball stick with the power clean and squat, these lifts translate great onto the field
I agree with you that bench and curls might be for the girls, but I don't necessarily understand your assessment about bench not being related to getting "punch." I remember reading a story about Larry Allen when he benched 700 pounds, and the paper quoted some Cowboys linebacker saying that in practice, when he'd rush the passer, he always knew were Allen was, because he's so strong (I thought he meant in the bench, since that was the crux of the story) that if Allen got even a one-handed punch on the guy, he would end up flying into the bench, or at least way out of the play. What am I missing here? Sure, the clean is important, I guess. That makes sense, I suppose. But wouldn't the bench be equally important for "punch" considering it strengthens the very muscles used in a punching motion? Forgive me if I'm missing something obvious here. Thanks. Great story, guys. Looking forward to seeing the new version of our big uglies.
