Until 1980, we traveled the day of the game. Exceptions were really long trips (Ped State, OSU, Alabama Florida). The conference made a rule requiring overnight stays for conference road games in 1980.

It isn't that big a deal. We would stay in a hotel the night before after the 1976 season regardless of road or home game.

And we bused the day of the game for trips like Baylor or TCU.

I don't know why the announcer would say that but I can promise it was not true.

So glad you saw them at a hotel. Don't know why the announcers had a conversation about the team coming in on Saturday. Thanks for sharing.

In 1980 when your team beat UT in Austin, did you all stay Friday night or did you all go down there Saturday morning on the bus? I thought I remember you saying Coach Meyer almost let you all stay Saturday night after the big win over UT at Lance McLhenny's pleading, but he decided the team should bus back to Dallas. I won't make your repeat the Burnt Orange van and old lady story. :D

What I was told, was that the Houston hotel rooms were reserved in advance by Texas high school football teams which are higher profile, better organized, and have much larger fan bases than SMU football, at this point.

That is not a June decision, that is a cost-cutting move.

Is this a sign that the AD is not going to be able to get the school to continue investing in the program? Or is it the sign of a major donor pulling back?

Already caught you in a June to the death supporting lie. The team was there Friday and you are trying to shift the blame away from June to the AD on something that did not happen. And you did it making a statement as if you had definitive knowledge. What a schill you are.

I cannot speak for all hotels in Houston but I did not see anybody in our particular hotel that remotely resembled high school teams or fans. Only SMU people and random others.

We had to stay the night before as that was a conference rule. This was new to us and a big change (at least for me). It was kinda boring as we had nothing to do. At least in Big D we didn’t have to show up at the hotel until around 10 or so. That allowed us to go out to eat, take in a HS game or other activities. For my part, I like to travel the day of the game if possible.

I don't know about Lance and the coaches talking about staying in Austin. To my knowledge there was no talk after the game about staying. For my part, I wanted to get back to Big D to celebrate. I could care less about partying in Austin with a bunch of depressed Tea sip losers on a Saturday night.
