I kind of wish the Big East wasnt going around flaunting the Coast to Coast strategy. Now all the other conferences can see the potential. So basically we are screwd if conference realignment happens again... awesome. Maybe thats why we are going to be a basketball school since conference doesnt matter in that case.

SMU administration either needs to go "all in" like the schools in the big boy conferences do. Either that, or just drop the football to 1-AA Southland Conference, or join up with the Ivy League schools.

When I mean "all in," I mean by any means necessary. Start by getting an administration that understands just how important athletics is to a university...Including athletic friendly majors. Get an athletic staff that is passionate about SMU, and the importance of being perceived as a major player at the big boy table.

Finally, bring back what's left of the "naughty nine," include the COC, and let them give whatever support the athletic department deems necessary. In today's athletic world ($$$$). Either you are a major player, or you're on the outside looking in. I guess I'm one of the few who are old enough to remember when SMU was a major player in the athletic world!

there is a perception that if we dropped down to 1-AA we would be successful. I personally doubt it.

You have said one of the smartest things on the board in over a decade. Paragraph #2 is spot on. With the exception of Forest Gregg, we have not had a coach since Ron Meyer who gets, understands, appreciates, and can articulate what SMU is to the outside world (recruits).

Yep, either you go 'all in' or drop it altogether as it would be a cash drain with zero upside.

I told Turner this once while Ford was under construction, I said he was building a mausoleum.

Problem is Forrest Gregg didn't get any support from Dr Kenneth Pye or AD, Jim Copeland.

You guys just need to accept that the conference we are going to is the same conference we are in. The new Big East will eventually just be the old CUSA. Accept that fact, and be glad we aren't in the new CUSA, which is the old Sun Belt. The big boys don't want the little boys to play with them.

You accept that fate stealth, cause I won't...If this is the case, SMU might as well drop the football program to 1-AA Southland Conference.

I've said to go "all in" before. I said it differently by saying that if you want to be a powerhouse program that you are gonna have to do what it takes to achieve it.

When the power teams want to schedule the ones that don't count, I wonder if the teams that don't count can up the price that it takes to play. It could backfire I suppose.

I heard that Colorado State just scheduled Alabama for 2013 and 2015 for $1 Million or so dollars.
So that makes me wonder if the Group of Five can start asking for more money to play the big schools and get it or not.

What if the decision has already been made? We are to be a basketball school that has a football team. Football allowed us access to the Big East...but maybe we are in the process of de-emphasizing football without telling alums and supporters.

We wouldn't need to drop down to 1-AA...we just quietly change emphasis and move on.

Administrators know every complaint that has been brought up on this board...we have to assume they are smart and competent. What if things are going pretty much according to plan?

Said this on another board I have no problem with 6-6 , 7-5 and an occasional 8-4 when we best TCU if it means we have a top 10 hoops team year in and year out (in other words, Duke)

Amen Brother! Gregg did what he could given the limiations. June is the first to have restrictions lifted and look at how hard it is to crawl out of the hole we have been in for 25 years. If you find someone like Meyer now, it won't take much to get the program going again since there are atheletic friendly majors again.

I really don't want to be in a conference with T-sips. They will dictate everything and I still think they were our biggest problem in the 'Death Penalty' thing. If it can get a few yrs under its belt the BE may hold the best markets. As for us, 'SMU fans', we gotta get butts in seats. Game attendance is perhaps our biggest negative (always has been). To get butts in seats we need to WIN (and do a few other things like promote!). If we could have 2 or 3 seasons going 10 or 11 wins the difference in the stadium and on campus would be night and day. Lombardy was right - 'winning is everything'.

As for a replacing coach how about Adrian Klemm? I was not very connected with the fb staff, etc. and I heard the rumor that AK was lazy, but that might have been a staff problem that has details we are not privy to. One thing we would see is better recruits. And, I think he liked SMU as a school. Young coach trying to break in as a big time coach. A school that wants him. Could be magic.

I would run in a thong through Oak Lawn for SMU to be in the same conference as Texas again.
