Re: Serious Question
I agree too. Some of you in your twenties wanting to pack it in making me laugh. Many of SMU's alumni had to watch 20 years of hell and you guys are crying because we might not go to a bowl for our 4th straight year. The program is institutionally capable of competing in the future.

Re: Serious Question
Is it all over? Of course not, namely because we have Dallas and wealthy alumni. But if there is a separation and its at 64 teams and we are not included, I think we are screwed and should probably consider shutting down the FB program within 10 years if not sooner.
btw, I do not think it is a given that we would be excluded from the 64 because of our location, but the odds would be less than 50%.
Why do I think this time is different than the dark days of post-DP? MONEY.
They are talking about the Big 10 teams receiving over $30M per school when their TV deal renews. Some are saying closer to $40M. That tells me the disparity between haves and have-nots will become even more extreme. We get left behind and end up in a Sun-Belt type conference with UNT, Tulsa and Rice and we 'maybe' get $2-3M per year. How do you compete against programs earning over 10X what you do? You don't, not in the long term. You didn't like the [deleted] whipping A&M gave us, that will occur every time we play a Big Boy school. Given this, who would we schedule that would draw even 10,000 to Ford. SMU fans have spoken loud and clear, they are only interested in seeing opponents they care about, but they also don't want to be on the receiving end of a humiliating loss.
To me the stakes have never been higher. I posted 2 years ago? that if we get left behind and TCU and UH went BCS the cost to SMU in NPV would be $100M. I now think I was grossly understating it. I look at myself as a perfect example. I could have gone to any school in Texas. For undergraduate, it came down to SMU and UT. SMU being in the SWC absolutely influenced by decision. Being a business major, I like competition. What if the future Fords', Crows', Hunts', Coxs', Sewells', Dedmans' think the same way. What if even 1/4 of them feel that way.

Re: Serious Question
I'm in the 20s area and I'm not crying about bowls I'm whining that we can't compete against big teams. We need a t Boone Pickens alum or the under armor alum

We don't worry 'bout no stinkin' deficits in the Age of Obama!PK wrote:How would going independent help with the 10 million deficit per year?SMUfrat wrote:OK - So with the conference mix up going on... There is a possibility we come out ahead, but also a big possibility we come out behind.
If the top 5 leagues enter 16 team conferences and STOP there... I think we have a place in top 80 teams...
If 4 major conferences survive, 64 - SMU is out.
So the possibility of SMU getting in the SEC is tiny. The possibility of SMU in B12 is almost equally as small. Will SMU continue to fun a athletic program at a 10 Million dollar defeciet PER YEAR?
Does SMU drop the football program? I doubt it... but all SMU fans would have to accept the reality that we will NEVER be big time again. Never win a national title. Never rejoin old rivals. DEFEATED forever.
Or do we go independent?
What is SMU's move if Big East has fallen apart and we dont get that coveted invite to a top teir conference?

I want a free phone from Obama, he can't just keep giving stuff to the 47%!!
Re: Serious Question
Political aside: The "Obama phone" came from the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which passed through the Gingrich House. It's paid for with the "USF" charge you see on your phone bill each month. It's a total straw man.SMU_Alumni11 wrote:I want a free phone from Obama, he can't just keep giving stuff to the 47%!!

If we didn't have DIv1a football, the deficit would be much, much larger. Furthermore, the deficit is a component of the u absorbing the scholarships at full-price.

Uh, but Obama extended it from a home line to a cell phone, whose primary beneficiaries are the telecoms that provide the service (who gave generously to obama's election in 2008).NY Pony wrote:Political aside: The "Obama phone" came from the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which passed through the Gingrich House. it's not a straw man, it's a brick house. And these poor people who cannot afford a phone, up-charge their service from the original $1.6B in government "free" aid to the tune of $10.5B in "additional services" paid for by the "customer" of the free phone. How can they afford 10x more services but not the free part?
It's called crony capitalism wrapped in paying for a vote. It's illegal to pay for a vote, but if the government "gives" you something, and you know which party gave it to ya, wink wink...
