Top 25 in all we do?
After seeing Kent State in the polls, I was curious to see exactly how many teams have been ranked in the AP or Coach's poll for at least 1 week - since the thought of SMU being ranked seems oh so far away.
Since June has been here:
ACC: every team except Duke (last ranked 1994?)
Big 10: every team (except Purdue who has been ranked in the last 10 years and Indiana)
Big 12: every team
Big East: every team, except Syracuse (last ranked 2001), and Temple
CUSA: UCF, Southern Miss, Rulsa, Houston (and Marshall, Memphis, UTEP in last 10 years)
Independents: ND, BYU (Navy within last 10 years)
MAC: Kent state, ohio, northern illinois, ball state, toledo, central michigan
MWC: fresno state, boise, air force, nevada, hawaii
Pac 12: every team except Washington and Washington state (who have both been ranked in the past 10 years)
SEC: every team except Kentucky (ranked in the last 10 years)
WAC: Utah State, San jose state, La Tech
I don't really know what conclusion to make from all of this, except to say that in the last 10 years, UCF, Southern Miss, Tulsa, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Utep, Kent State, Ohio, Northern Illinois, Ball State, Toledo, Central Michigan, Fresno State, Air force, nevada, hawaii, Utah State, San Jose State and La Tech can all say that they have been ranked for at least a week.
Surely we should be able to have enough success to be ranked at some point. Sadly, I'm just not sure I see this happening anytime soon.

Re: Top 25 in all we do?
Since JJ has been here we haven't been a top 25 team to be sure. But we also moved out of the perpetual Bottom 10. And bowl # 4, even a crummy bowl, starts to build a reputation for consistent winning. We have a long way to go to change the attitude around the country towards SMU.
How many articles do we read even to this day that doesn't mention the DP? And most mention how we sucked for decades. As much as I would like to be considered a top notch program, that isn't going to happen until we wash away the DP legacy. Too many people grew up with SMU as the worse team in college football. Hades, we lost an entire generation of Pony fans becasue of how horrible we sucked.
Now is JJ the man to move us out of the Bottom 10 and into the top 25? That is for others to decide. Nobody that makes that decision has asked my opinion. Hades, nobody on PF has asked my opinion! So my opinion isn’t worthy of consideration when it comes to JJ and SMU’s future.
For now I am thrilled to be in bowl # 4. It has the potential to change others’ around the country perception of SMU as a constant loser. We need as amny post season games and wins as possible to change people's attitude about our program.

Kent State plays a weak schedule and got KILLED by a horrible Kentucky team 47-14. With that schedule, I'm sure we would be ranked as well.

Did they lose to anybody as bad as Tulane?Pony ^ wrote:Kent State plays a weak schedule and got KILLED by a horrible Kentucky team 47-14. With that schedule, I'm sure we would be ranked as well.

I think Kent State beat a BCS team as well. I don't think SMU could have beaten Kentucky if we they could not beat Rice or Tulane.

Our schedule was only marginally tougher than Kent State. They beat 4 teams with 8+ wins.Pony ^ wrote:Kent State plays a weak schedule and got KILLED by a horrible Kentucky team 47-14. With that schedule, I'm sure we would be ranked as well.

Yes, they beat Big East leader Rutgers.Rebel10 wrote:I think Kent State beat a BCS team as well. I don't think SMU could have beaten Kentucky if we they could not beat Rice or Tulane.

Tap the brakes a bit Ponyte SMU has not had a winning season yet. 6-6 is not a winning season. Phil Bennett had a 6-6 season. SMU has one more game to go before that is decided. Glad they are going to a bowl but not thrilled to be mediocre unless that is the goal 5 years into a coaches tenure with less restrictions placed on him that any other coach since the DP.

No way we'd be ranked with Kent State's schedule, we'd have at least 6 losses
@Kentucky
@Army
@Rutgers
@Bowling Green
vs. Ohio
vs. Ball State

Re: Top 25 in all we do?
"The Top 25 in all we do" is nothing but empty rhetoric to dupe SMU supporters into giving more money. We are not even close to Top 25 in the revenue sports. Where is the indoor practice facility that should have been built 5 years ago? Top 25 programs have one but we don't. I could keep going about SMU's deficiencies but I have beaten that dead horse enough.
Re: Top 25 in all we do?
I respectfully disagree. I think Baylor would be undefeated with their schedule. The same was said about West Virginia's schedule last yr...then they joined the Big 12 and barely became bowl eligible.MustangStealth wrote:Our schedule was only marginally tougher than Kent State. Re: Top 25 in all we do?
I overlooked the BCS rankings. I was only looking at AP/Coach's. Washington hasn't been ranked in either of those polls in the last 5 years, but were #25 in bcs last week.
