John Feinstein weighs in

Post by EastStang »

Basically, the short version is the Hoops teams should seek out Xavier and other A10 schools and tell football to take a hike. He sneers at SMU, Tulane and others coming to play Georgetown in hoops.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

He went to Duke, but is vitriolically anti-Duke ever since Duke chose an AD he did not favor a few years ago (for the record, I think Feinstein was right).

Not really. None of those basketball schools listens to Feinstein, some (e.g., Villanova) have fan bases that want to be in Big East football, and all of them will be concerned about jumping off the cliff and divorcing themselves from football until they give the new conference a chance. The only caveat: the basketball-only schools have a window in 2013 after the ACC-departing schools leave and before SMU and others officially arrive when they have enough votes to dissolve the conference. If they're desperate enough, I suppose they could do it.

He took a shot at ECU which is NOT joining the Big East for BB.

Of the new schools:
1) Memphis has historically been pretty good in BB;
2) SMU is spending the money to become good in BB;
3) Houston was once very good and seems to be on the right path;
4) Tulane is a problem, but they seem to want to compete again;
5) Temple has been pretty good in basketall
6) They still get Uconn

Also...Memphis, SMU, Houston, Tulane & Temple are all in NBA cities. That may be a factor for Big East folks. Big East brand is meaningful in bball, but no longer in football. Let's face it...ever since the ACC took Miami and Va Tech, Big East has not really deserved a seat at the BCS table
