There was a story in the DMN that said the same thing about Baylor.
The same could be said/written about SMU, and nearly every other private school in the country, right?

Ticket sales are the most important part of any college athletics program.

About 70% of all college revenue comes from ticket sales. Lots of people want to moan and groan about BCS revenue (not getting any), but the vast majority of funding comes from ticket sales.

Baylor's women's basketball program sold out 3 times in 2005. That's $225,000 (10,000 seats - $6-$10/seat). Reportedly, BU"s WBB coach makes $600K/annually, so it is easy to see what impact (sold-out) games make. (Actual Avg attendance was 6,700 per game, about $45,000/game in ticket revenue). If a coach is worth his/her salt, THEY will get the fans in the seats - one way or another.

This quote fits:

"When I played football here from 1990 to ‘94, Fred Goldsmith was our coach. He was a different kind of guy....but there was one thing that he used to say, over and over again, that has really stuck with me, and I think it’s pertinent to what we’re trying to accomplish here. On many occasions, he’d stand in front of us, and tell us to ask ourselves, ‘If I don’t, who will?’"

"I think that’s perfect here. If we don’t, who will? If we don’t fight for Rice athletics, who will? If we don’t attend sporting events, who will? If we don’t donate to the program, who will?"
